In the early hours of Tuesday, a 49-year-old Cuban man was stabbed in the abdomen by a group of six men who stole his electric bicycle in Georgetown, Guyana.

The victim, Yoilan Guindo Mestre, who resides in the Guyanese capital, was hospitalized following the brutal attack, as reported by the local newspaper Kaieteur News.

The incident took place around midnight on Laluni Street in the Queenstown neighborhood, close to Guindo Mestre's residence.

According to the report, Guindo Mestre was pushing his black electric bicycle when six men approached him from the opposite direction and attempted to snatch it away.

When the Cuban resisted, one of the attackers pulled out a knife and stabbed him on the left side of his abdomen.

Wounded, Guindo Mestre fell to the ground, allowing the six assailants to flee with the electric bicycle, which is valued at approximately 80,000 Guyanese dollars, or about 385 U.S. dollars.

Despite his injury, the victim managed to retrieve his cell phone and call a friend for help.

The friend arrived at the scene and initially took him to the Alberttown Police Station, where the assault was reported. Guindo Mestre was then transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital for medical treatment.

At the time of the report, he remained under medical care. Details regarding the severity of his condition were not disclosed.

The Guyana Police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the six suspects. As of the Kaieteur News and Guyana Express News report, no arrests had been made.

Violence Against Cubans in Guyana

This assault once again highlights the security challenges faced by Cuban residents in Guyana, a nation that has become a hub for many island migrants in recent years, drawn by job opportunities from the oil boom.

In July, a 25-year-old Cuban died after being attacked in the country.

Earlier in August, three Cuban nationals were imprisoned, accused of killing a fellow Cuban in a separate incident where both the victim and suspects were from Cuba.

Other violent incidents have also occurred in Georgetown.

In May, 23-year-old Dainier Vegas Infante was shot dead at his workplace.

Months prior, in December 2025, Ariel Betancourt Ramírez was fatally stabbed during an apparent robbery in the Guyanese capital.

While these episodes are driven by different circumstances and do not conclusively indicate that Cubans are targeted in a wave of violence, they do underscore the security risks faced by a rapidly growing migrant community.
