Helicopter Tragedy in Kenya Claims Seven Lives: New Insights Emerge

Rescue teams operating in Samburu County have successfully retrieved four out of the seven bodies from the helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday near Mount Ololokwe in northern Kenya, as reported by Telemundo 51.

The remaining three victims are still trapped within the charred wreckage of the aircraft, and search efforts are set to resume this Friday.

The tragic incident took place at 9:13 a.m. local time when a Eurocopter EC130 B4, operated by the Kenyan company Lady Lori Helicopters, crashed in rugged terrain. The helicopter was on a chartered flight from Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro River.

Onboard were six passengers alongside pilot Josh Outram. Tragically, there were no survivors.

Investigation into the Crash

Fred Kabung, the chief investigator for Kenya's Air Accidents Investigation Department (AAID), described the challenging conditions of the crash site: "The terrain is severely rugged. It's an area we are completely unfamiliar with, requiring helicopter transport from one point to another."

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and the Ministry of Roads and Transport.

Remembering the Victims

Among the deceased were five American citizens, several of whom had connections to Florida and the Latin American community in Miami, according to the State Department.

The Ecuadorian Loss

Among those who perished were Michele Sensi-Contugi, 44, head of Ecuador's Center for Strategic Intelligence since January 2024, and a trusted figure of President Daniel Noboa. He was traveling with his wife, Stephany Hollihan Vásconez, 42, a renowned fashion designer and founder of Sensi Studio. The couple leaves behind two children.

Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa expressed his grief on social media, stating: "The accident in Kenya took two friends from me, but more importantly, it took two people who were family to us. Michele stood by me during some of the most challenging times. Loyal, brave, and steadfast, he was irreplaceable in our shared battles, leaving a void in those yet to come."

Following the confirmation of the tragedy, the Ecuadorian government declared three days of national mourning and appointed Luis Carlos Ávila as the interim director of the organization.

Loss of American Lives

Among the American victims was José Alberto Suárez, 55, president and general manager of Telemundo stations in Orlando, Tampa, and Ft. Myers-Naples. With over 25 years in Hispanic media, he had Cuban roots. An internal memo from NBCUniversal, as reported by CBS News, described him as "an exceptional colleague and mentor to many."

Cuban journalist Javier Díaz remembered him on social media, saying: "This man offered me my first television job in Texas after emigrating from Cuba."

Another victim was Roger Edward Duarte, 39, founder of George Stone Crab and co-founder of My Ceviche, who was featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2016. He was married to Nicole Valls, granddaughter of the founder of the iconic Versailles restaurant on Calle Ocho. The Duarte and Valls families shared their devastation over the loss.

Also among the deceased were Adam Hlavaty, co-founder of Mrkt Group and former vice president of development at Benihana, residing in Coral Gables, and his partner Henry Parra, an aviation software executive and U.S. Navy veteran, who was on a sabbatical to travel and spend time with loved ones.

Images shared by the Kenyan Red Cross showed thick smoke rising from the forested slopes of Mount Ololokwe and the aircraft wreckage still aflame. The bodies retrieved exhibited severe burns.

Lady Lori Helicopters stated they were "deeply shocked" and extended condolences to the families. The State Department noted that the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi is providing consular assistance to those affected.
