José Alberto Suárez, the president and general manager of Telemundo's stations in Orlando, Tampa, and Fort Myers, tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash in Kenya on Wednesday. At 55, Suárez had dedicated over 20 years to the American television industry.

Telemundo confirmed the death of this executive with Cuban roots, which led to an outpouring of grief among colleagues and media professionals across Florida, where he had spent much of his career.

According to Telemundo 51, the crash took place in Samburu County near Mount Ololokwe when the Eurocopter EC130 B4 he was aboard crashed around 9:13 a.m. local time. The helicopter was on a journey from the private Loisaba Conservancy to Ewaso Nyiro.

Suárez was identified as one of the four American victims. The challenging terrain and a fire at the crash site complicated search and rescue efforts, according to the Kenya Red Cross. An additional team was dispatched from Isiolo to assist with the emergency operations, as reported by NBC News.

The U.S. State Department later confirmed that four of the seven victims were American citizens, and noted that the U.S. Embassy is in contact with local authorities to provide consular assistance. "We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones for their loss," a spokesperson stated.

Among the deceased were Michele Sensi-Contugi Ycaza, the director general of Ecuador's National Intelligence Center and close associate of President Daniel Noboa, along with his wife, Stephany Hollihan Vásconez. The Ecuadorian official was 44 years old and held dual Ecuadorian and Italian citizenship. The identities of the other victims had not been publicly confirmed at the time of this report.

Remembering an Influential Leader and Mentor

The news sent shockwaves through Telemundo and NBCUniversal. In a joint statement, NBCU News Group President César Conde, NBCU Local President Valari Staab, and Telemundo Station Group President José Cancela expressed their sorrow over the loss of Suárez.

"With profound sadness, we share the tragic news that José Suárez, the president and general manager of Telemundo-owned stations in Orlando, Tampa, and Fort Myers, has died in a helicopter accident in Kenya," they stated.

Describing him as "an exceptional colleague and a mentor to many," the executives highlighted his "energy, sense of humor, warmth, and strong sense of purpose" that he brought to his work. "His impact reached far beyond the stations he led," they added.

Suárez had amassed over 25 years of experience in media, with 18 years tied to Telemundo and NBC stations. Originally from Florida, he previously managed Telemundo 33, Telemundo Fresno, Telemundo Las Vegas, Telemundo Utah, and Telemundo San Antonio before leading the three stations at the time of his passing.

He also spent nearly four years at NBC Miami as director of creative services and programming, and earlier served as executive producer of entertainment programs. His professional achievements were recognized with an Emmy Lone Star, an Emmy Suncoast, three Emmy Awards for Best Daily Newscast, and several Associated Press honors.

Cuban journalist Javier Díaz paid tribute to Suárez, acknowledging the pivotal role he played in his career after emigrating from Cuba. Díaz shared on social media that it was Suárez who gave him his first opportunity in American television.

"Today is a sad day. José Suárez died in an air accident. Friends, this man offered me my first television job in Texas after emigrating from Cuba," Díaz wrote on social media.

The professional connection between them persisted over the years, with Díaz recalling their reunion last year at the Emmy Awards gala. "Throughout his career, he supported many professionals and grew as a Telemundo executive. My heartfelt condolences to his family," Díaz expressed.

This testimony reflects one of the aspects his colleagues emphasized following the tragedy: his role as a mentor and supporter of other professionals within the Hispanic television community in the United States.

Suárez's death signifies a significant loss for a media community deeply connected to Florida's Cuban and Latin American diaspora over the decades. Telemundo announced plans to honor José Alberto Suárez's life and legacy in the coming days.
