Political Prisoner Eider Frómeta Released After Nearly Eight Years in Boniato Prison

Tuesday, August 18, 2026 by Isabella Sanchez

Cuban dissident Eider Frómeta Allen, a member of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU) and advocate for the Cuba Decide initiative, was freed this Tuesday after spending over seven and a half years behind bars.

Shortly after leaving Boniato prison in Santiago de Cuba, Frómeta returned to his home in Guantánamo. There, he recorded a video with his family and fellow activists, which was shared on social media by opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer García.

"I came out alive; the regime couldn't break me, and here we are. We are here to keep moving forward," Frómeta declared.

Detention and Political Imprisonment

Frómeta was apprehended in January 2019 and sentenced to eight and a half years for charges including disobedience, assault, and burglary. Human rights organizations such as Prisoners Defenders, Cubalex, and the Cuban Observatory for Human Rights have classified his imprisonment as politically motivated.

Initially held at the Guantánamo Combined Prison, Frómeta was later transferred to Boniato prison after initiating a hunger strike.

Challenges Behind Bars

In May 2025, Cubalex reported a pattern of repression against Frómeta while incarcerated, which involved denial of minimal severity status, inadequate medical care, and retaliation for exposing prison conditions.

In his first message after his release, Frómeta vowed to reveal the details of his prison ordeal.

"I will later detail everything I went through in prison, all the violations, abuses, and mistreatment suffered by myself and my family. My family endured so much, my son growing up without me. It was seven years and eight months of imprisonment," he stated.

Ferrer, broadcasting the video from exile, claimed that during Frómeta's imprisonment, he endured "violence, beatings, torture, and solitary confinement."

Continuing the Fight for Freedom

Despite nearly eight years of incarceration, Frómeta emphasized that his release doesn't mark the end of his political activism.

"The struggle continues; we keep fighting. We've changed the arena to the streets, but we persist in battling for the freedom of the Cuban people and their political rights," he asserted.

He also expressed solidarity with those still imprisoned.

"I support all the political prisoners I left behind, who asked me to speak for them. Here I am, and I will do it," he promised.

His release comes as Prisoners Defenders recorded 1,327 political prisoners in Cuba by the end of July 2026, following the addition of 36 new cases that month.

The Boniato prison, where Frómeta served much of his sentence, has been repeatedly condemned by organizations and activists for its poor conditions, including overcrowding, inadequate food, water access, and medical care.

Now free and reunited with his family, Frómeta is determined to continue his activism.

"The regime is in power today, but we can overthrow it. We will keep fighting for that," he concluded.
