An early morning blaze has devastated a branch of Farm Stores, widely recognized as "La Vaquita," situated in southwest Miami-Dade. The fire inflicted significant damage on the premises and left local residents in shock, as reported by Telemundo 51.
The fire was reported at 7:11 a.m. near the 15000 block of SW 56th Street, close to the intersection with SW 152nd Avenue, an area densely populated with Latino residents.
Fortunately, only one individual was inside the store at the time, and they managed to exit without needing assistance.
"At the time of the fire, there was a person inside who exited the structure safely on their own," stated Miami-Dade firefighters. Paramedics evaluated the individual at the scene, but no medical transport was necessary.
Miami-Dade Fire Battalion Chief Kenneth Wood confirmed that crews successfully extinguished the flames before they reached the store's roof.
Images circulated on social media, showing the shop completely engulfed in flames.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by authorities.
This incident has particularly impacted local residents and regular customers who have frequented the store for decades. The blaze consumed an establishment that has been a staple stop for many South Florida families over the years.
The Legacy of Farm Stores
Farm Stores began in Florida in 1957 as a drive-thru convenience chain focusing on milk and bakery products. With the influx of Cuban and Latin American immigrants to Miami in the '60s and '70s, the stores adapted by including Latin staples like Cuban bread, flan, cheese tequeños, cachitos, corn arepas, empanadas, and even Cuban pizza in some locations.
The nickname "La Vaquita" comes from the cow in the company's logo. The store offers everyday grocery items, freshly baked bread, hot coffee, and prepared food like pizzas and sandwiches.
Today, there are over 30 Farm Stores locations in South Florida, making it a familiar sight in the daily life of Miami-Dade's community.
