Pitcher from Cienfuegos Leaves Cuban Baseball Due to Lack of Opportunities: "Another Injustice"

Renowned pitcher Hermes González, once hailed as the top talent for the Cienfuegos Elephants, has chosen to leave Cuban baseball, frustrated after years of being overlooked by the national team selectors. This decision, highlighted by sports commentator Pavel Otero, has stirred significant conversation on social media platforms.

The turning point for González dates back to the 61st National Series, where he achieved 10 wins with a Cienfuegos team that languished at the bottom of the standings. "Securing 10 victories and leading in that category throughout most of the championship, with a team that barely won any games, was a remarkable feat," Otero noted.

Despite his outstanding performance, a call to join the Cuban national team never materialized. "Following that sensational season, marked by elements of heroism, came the shocking blow: Hermes González was not invited to the national team. This is one of the many injustices in our baseball, enough to fill an entire book," Otero commented.

Undeterred, González continued to hone his skills. With physical trainer Yariel Madrazo's support, he perfected a high-quality breaking pitch and increased his pitching speed to peaks of 95 mph, consistently maintaining above 90 mph. Although several provinces sought him as a reinforcement, the national selectors continued to ignore him.

"Hermes González is the top pitcher in his province and ranks among the best in the National Series, yet he is invisible when it comes to forming a national team," Otero emphasized.

Now at 31, González's patience has worn thin. Otero mentioned that sports authorities in Cienfuegos made no effort to retain him: no one approached him for discussions or attempts to persuade him to stay. Consequently, the pitcher is contemplating leaving Cuba to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Otero points out that González's situation differs significantly from other players who leave for better contracts and later return to support their provinces. "For Hermes, like others in the country, the decision to leave stems from sheer disillusionment," he expressed, describing it as "a loss for our Series and our baseball."

The case of González underscores the institutional neglect surrounding athletes. Otero highlighted that Yariel Madrazo, the physical trainer instrumental to González's development, also receives no recognition, despite being one of the country's most skilled professionals.

"Cienfuegos loses its best pitcher, and Cuba adds yet another injustice to a long list, a list that, if penned, would eclipse the length of The Count of Monte Cristo," concluded Pavel Otero.
