Cuban Doctor Allegedly Involved in Fatal Hit-and-Run in Cancun

A tragic event unfolded on Friday on Bonampak Avenue in Cancun, Quintana Roo, where a woman lost her life after being struck by a speeding white Honda SUV.

Local media outlets have speculated that the driver might be a Cuban doctor, although no official confirmation regarding either the driver's nationality or profession has been made by the authorities.

The incident was captured by the state's urban surveillance cameras.

The Twitter account Quintana Roo Urbano shared the footage, stating: "This is how a Cuban doctor killed a doctor this afternoon on Bonampak Avenue."

Meanwhile, El Momento QRoo reported preliminary information suggesting the driver might be associated with the Mexican Social Security Institute. However, they emphasized that this information must be verified or refuted by authorities as part of ongoing investigations.

Details of the Crash

According to reports from local news sources, the Honda was traveling north to south on Bonampak when the driver lost control near Chinchorro street.

The vehicle mounted the central median, knocking down a streetlight. It then flipped over and continued moving for more than 50 meters before crashing into the back of a white Kia SUV, which appeared to be a rideshare vehicle, near Plaza Península.

At that moment, a woman alighting from the Kia was struck by the impact. Despite paramedics’ efforts, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her body was taken to the Semefo for autopsy and identification.

The Honda's driver sustained injuries and was transported to an IMSS clinic for medical care. At least two other individuals were also injured in the accident.

Accusations of Recklessness

The media outlet Esto Es Quintana Roo Mx described the tragic event starkly: "It wasn’t her time. A woman died today for no reason in a busy avenue in Cancun. She wasn’t driving or running. She was in the Plaza Península parking lot when tragedy struck."

The outlet further noted that witnesses claimed the driver was speeding, concluding, "This was not an accident. It was recklessness that took the life of a woman who was simply living her day."

Unofficial reports suggest the driver might have been intoxicated, but this has not been confirmed by officials.

Incident with a Cuban at the Scene

Aside from the accident itself, a separate incident occurred during the media coverage. A video by Heraldo Viral showed a different Cuban man, unrelated to the Honda driver, acting aggressively toward reporters covering the event.

The journalist capturing the scene described the situation: "This Cuban man is being arrogant with others, acting superior, even though he’s not in his country."

No connection has been found between this individual and the driver, suggesting he was merely a bystander at the location.

The Presence of Cuban Doctors in Quintana Roo

This accident takes place amid a significant influx of Cuban doctors in the region. As of February 2026, the IMSS-Bienestar program reported 173 Cuban doctors working in rural areas of Quintana Roo, with 30 more expected to arrive.

Nationally, the administration under Claudia Sheinbaum has reaffirmed its commitment to the Cuban medical brigade agreement, with approximately 3,650 doctors deployed across 23 states.

This is not the first incident involving Cuban nationals in Cancun to attract media attention. Recently, a Cuban was arrested after a hit-and-run in Mexico City, along with other violent events in the Caribbean tourist hotspot that have caught the public eye.
