A night of turmoil unfolded in the early hours of Friday in the Vista Hermosa neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba, as knife-wielding robberies and a fire at a small dumpsite prompted the intervention of both the Revolutionary National Police and the Fire Brigade.
According to Aris Arias Batalla, the provincial head of Operations and Relief for the local Red Cross chapter, who reported live from the scene, the events began around 3:00 a.m.
The police operation kicked off with a vehicular chase: patrol car unit 564 pursued a phone snatcher whose victim hailed from the adjacent Trocha district. During the pursuit, one of the suspects tossed a green bag at the intersection of 5th Street between B and C. Although the suspect managed to flee, officers retrieved the bag, which contained two cell phones and a knife.
Meanwhile, the same patrol car was already transporting another detainee, also found with a bladed weapon. It was unclear at the time whether the two individuals were connected.
While the police were engaged in their operation, shouts of "Fire!" erupted from residents just a block away. A solid waste dump located at the corner of A Street and 3rd Street was ablaze, threatening nearby homes and a wooden utility pole.
Provincial Fire Brigade Command 4 swiftly responded and extinguished the flames before they could spread to nearby structures or damage electrical infrastructure.
Arias Batalla described the fire as an act of "social irresponsibility carried out by unscrupulous individuals endangering lives, homes, and communities."
