This week's eclipse was notably more generous. In Oviedo, total darkness enveloped the area for one minute and 48 seconds, while Castellón de la Plana witnessed a full eclipse lasting precisely one minute and 34 seconds, the longest duration in the entire Valencian Community due to its position near the central line of the eclipse.
The path of totality swept across Spain from west to east, covering regions such as Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Aragón, the Valencian Community, and the Balearic Islands. Unfortunately, Madrid and Barcelona were outside the zone of complete darkness.
Twilight Drama Unfolds in Spanish Skies
Taking place at sunset, the eclipse added a dramatic visual element as the sun hung low on the horizon. The sky was painted with vibrant oranges and pinks typical of twilight, yet these hues were caused by the Moon's interference with the sun's light. In these moments, the solar corona became visible to the naked eye.
Images of this stunning event quickly went viral on social media. Meteorologist Nahel Belgherze shared a photograph from Castrojeriz, Burgos, that garnered over 1.7 million views on X. The image captured the solar corona above a sunflower field in full bloom, with a Castilian church silhouetted against the colorful sky.
"Totality. Castrojeriz, Burgos, Spain, just moments ago," he wrote.
From Tarragona, a video posted by user Dylan K amassed over 1.5 million views. "Spain just plunged into darkness in the middle of the day. Total solar eclipse. Absolutely incredible," he described.
Clouds and Concerns: Challenges and Safety Measures
Not all regions enjoyed clear skies. According to the EFE agency, cloud cover hampered visibility in areas like Peña Cabarga, Suances, and Comillas, where many spectators had gathered hours earlier to secure a good viewing spot.
The best views in that region were reported in the La Lora moor. Around 1,400 police and emergency service personnel were on hand in Cantabria to ensure safety during the event.
Prior to the eclipse, consumer authorities mandated the recall of at least seven models of eclipse glasses due to irregularities. The affected brands included Lionstar, ECP Eye Care Professional, Pelispan, Homanaje, Orro, Opticalia, and Mó, from Multiópticas.
The irony, as highlighted by FACUA, was that the defect wasn't that the lenses were too clear, but rather too dark. The filters' excessive darkness fell below the minimum required transmittance, potentially tempting users to remove their glasses at the most perilous moment for eye safety.
This was the first of three consecutive annual eclipses to grace the Iberian Peninsula. The next one is slated for August 2, 2027, visible from the southern regions—Ceuta, Melilla, Cádiz, Málaga, Granada, and Almería—with totality lasting up to four minutes and 48 seconds in Ceuta and more than six minutes over the pyramids of Egypt.
