The Cuban government has announced an extension for driving and circulation licenses set to expire between January 1, 2026, and December 31, 2027. These licenses will now remain valid until 2028, allowing holders to avoid immediate renewal after the printed expiration date.

This decision, made by the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), was shared this Wednesday through the pro-government profile "Héroes de azul" in Cuba, which published the complete official statement.

According to the announcement, holders of these licenses must begin the renewal process starting January 2028 at the designated Offices of Procedures. They will have until December 31 of that year to finalize the renewal.

Throughout this period, the licenses included in the extension will remain valid, as confirmed by the MININT, which also stated that the measure takes effect immediately.

However, this extension does not exempt holders from the requirement to complete necessary medical examinations.

The agency further clarified that license holders aged 65 and 70 or older must keep their health checks up to date as scheduled.

The MININT did not specify why the validity of these documents has been extended by up to two years.

This is not the first instance where Cuban authorities have implemented such an extension. In January 2024, the MININT extended the validity of licenses expiring between 2020 and 2023, mandating that renewals be conducted that year. This decision was linked to pending processes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, challenges with issuing and renewing official documents resurfaced in early 2026.

In February, the MININT reported a shortage of plastic cards for identity documents, attributing the scarcity to the U.S. embargo. During this period, offices continued to accept applications but issued provisional certifications pending the arrival of necessary materials.

Authorities also determined that existing identity cards would remain valid beyond their expiration dates, provided they could still fully identify the holder.
