Argentinian political analyst Atilio Borón, a known supporter of Cuba's government, launched a verbal attack this Sunday against U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Borón warned Rubio that "Cuba will be the graveyard of your political career" following Rubio's remarks on the Trump administration's pressure tactics against Havana.
"Marco, rest assured that with all the suffering you've caused Cubans, Cuba will be the graveyard of your political career," Borón wrote on his social media account, X.

U.S. Strategy and Cuban Response
The controversy erupted after Rubio's exclusive interview with Axios, where he openly discussed Washington's policy of closing off avenues that might allow the Cuban regime to ease U.S. economic pressure.
"Every time they create a new mechanism to escape the stranglehold, we shut it down," Rubio asserted.
Additionally, Rubio emphasized that the U.S. is determined to make it clear to Havana that "there are no escape valves," and noted that this strategy would continue for "the next two and a half years," referencing the remaining time in Trump's current term.
His words sparked an angry response from Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) and a member of Cuba's Council of State.
"Years of clucking that the blockade doesn't exist, that 'the regime' doesn't work, that the State is 'failed'... And now they admit they want to strangle us, and that every time this country finds a way forward, they shut it down. Miserable!" Hernández Nordelo wrote on X.

Borón's comments were a direct response to Hernández Nordelo's publication, ramping up the criticism and targeting Rubio personally.
Borón has long been politically aligned with Havana and has frequently defended the so-called Cuban Revolution.
The attacks on Rubio coincided with the Trump administration's intensifying strategy toward Havana.
According to the interview with Axios, Washington has implemented over two dozen measures related to Cuba since January 2026, including sanctions against entities and individuals linked to the regime.
During the discussion, Rubio made it clear that the U.S. strategy does not aim to offer new concessions to Havana but rather to increase pressure progressively and hinder the Cuban government's attempts to bypass it.
Cuban Government's Stance
The Cuban regime has accused Washington of trying to worsen the island's economic situation.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla has repeatedly criticized Rubio, accusing him of lying about Cuba and using his statements to justify an increasingly aggressive policy against Havana.
