Recently, Cuba's Ministry of Transport revealed substantial modifications in the sale of tickets for national buses, trains, and the maritime connection to the Isle of Youth. These changes include reinstating ticket sales at Viajero agencies and shortening the reservation period to just three days before travel.
The announcement was made this past Sunday, with officials emphasizing that these adjustments were influenced by "public feedback" and the urgent need to maximize service occupancy, especially as demand continues to exceed the limited supply.
Restoration of Viajero Agency Sales
A significant update is that available seats on national trains, National Buses, and the maritime route to the Isle of Youth will once again be sold through the Viajero ticket agencies in municipalities where these offices exist.
This shift marks a departure from the previous system implemented in June, which had removed ticket sales from Viajero agencies and the Viajando app, reallocating available seats to provincial groups or commissions that prioritized certain cases.
Continued Role for Provincial Groups
While these provincial groups will not be entirely phased out, the Ministry stated they will retain a minimal number of seats for each National Bus departure originating from their area, to accommodate passengers with urgent travel needs.
However, the Viajando app will remain inactive. Authorities clarified that ticket reservations via the app would remain suspended until technical updates are completed, with further announcements on its return forthcoming.
Challenges Due to Fuel Shortages
The Viajando app's suspension dates back to June, coinciding with the Ministry's significant cutback on national and interprovincial services due to fuel shortages. During that period, the frequency of buses and trains was also reduced, and available seats were distributed based on priorities set by the authorities.
New Three-Day Reservation Window
Another notable change is the window for purchasing tickets. Effective immediately, reservations for buses, trains, and boats can be made just three days before the travel date. This measure is a response to "fuel supply challenges impacting scheduled departures," according to the Ministry.
This updated process will roll out this week. Starting Wednesday, August 12, Viajero agencies will begin selling tickets for trips commencing August 15, adhering to the new three-day reservation timeline.
Any unsold tickets at Viajero agencies will be available on the day of departure at train stations, maritime terminals, and National Bus terminals, as applicable.
At this time, the announcement does not include an increase in service frequency. The Ministry confirmed that the current schedules for National Buses, national trains, and the Isle of Youth ferry will remain unchanged. Additionally, the existing refund policy by Empresa Viajero will still apply.
This reorganization comes after months of severe adjustments in Cuban transport. Back in May, reductions in bus, train, and maritime services were announced due to a fuel crisis, leading to further restrictions and changes in the distribution of limited available tickets.
