The community of La Sierrita in Cumanayagua, situated in the province of Cienfuegos, is grappling with a troubling surge in alcohol abuse among teenagers and young adults. This issue is compounded by the use of pharmaceuticals and episodes of violence on weekends, according to a report by the official newspaper 5 de Septiembre.

With a population just over 4,400, this village is nestled at the foot of the Guamuhaya mountain range, lacking cinemas, cultural centers, and regular transportation, leaving residents with limited recreational options.

Weekend Gatherings Turn Into Problematic Hotspots

The town square, often filled with blaring speakers, has become the primary gathering spot during weekends. This area also witnesses questionable alcohol consumption, drug mixing, and occasional violent outbreaks, as noted in the publication.

Yaismadelys Carrazana Chaviano, the head of medical teaching in the area, described alcoholism as "a public health issue that manifests in a network" and highlighted that the most frequent cases involve young men, though young women are also affected.

Shifting Demographics of Substance Abuse

Experts express concern over the changing profile of substance abusers. The problem is no longer confined to well-known chronic adult drinkers but now involves adolescents and young adults who blend alcohol with medications—a combination that, according to Carrazana, immediately enhances aggression and impairs judgment.

Cultural norms also play a significant role. In many families, young men's initiation into drinking is still seen as a rite of passage into adulthood, a normalization that family medicine attempts to combat through prevention efforts and support from Cumanayagua's Mental Health Teams.

Efforts to Combat Alcoholism

Consultations have been established to prevent and address alcoholism and its effects. However, Carrazana identified the primary challenge as the reluctance of those affected to acknowledge their need for specialized help.

The repercussions extend beyond typical weekend brawls or hangovers. Excessive alcohol consumption leads to domestic violence and chronic diseases, with fatalities reported due to metabolic disruptions caused by alcohol.

Primary care professionals emphasize preventive work with children and youths, involving clinics, social workers, and mass organizations.

Carrazana stressed that the solution cannot be confined to the healthcare realm alone. "When individuals cease being their own hurdles in this fight, we will have won the ultimate battle against alcoholism, leaving no one alone," she asserted.

National Context of Substance Consumption

The situation in La Sierrita reflects a broader national issue of high alcohol consumption. In 2022, the National Health Survey, with data collected between 2018 and 2020, revealed that 73% of Cubans had consumed alcohol in the 30 days prior to the survey, up from 67% in 2010. Moreover, 68% reported starting to drink between the ages of 10 and 19.

Adding to this scenario is the increasing use of synthetic drugs. The National Toxicology Center reported in 2024 a more than 200% rise in cases compared to pre-pandemic levels, with 600 instances recorded that year, over 90% linked to synthetic substances, according to data presented in June 2026.

In Cienfuegos, July 2025 saw several family members accused of trafficking synthetic cannabinoids infused in school notebook leaves, impacting about twenty youths, including four minors.

Earlier in the month, Cuban priest Alberto Reyes Pías, parish priest in Esmeralda, Camagüey, highlighted his concerns about the country's issues, including rising youth illiteracy, child labor, drug proliferation, unpaid wages, elderly individuals receiving meager pensions after long bank lines, and unchecked street violence.

A report by Diario de Cuba in June warned of the quiet expansion of youth gangs across Cuba, driven by economic crisis, poverty, and synthetic drug trafficking.
