Man with Criminal Record Assaults Woman on Miami’s Calle Ocho: What Do We Know?

A man with a long history of criminal behavior was apprehended on Thursday in Miami after he punched a 61-year-old woman in the face as she was peacefully walking down Calle Ocho, in the heart of Little Havana.

The assault took place shortly after noon near the intersection of Southwest 8th Street and 11th Avenue, as reported by Telemundo 51.

The victim was heading east when Tavaris Dewand Greene, aged 40, approached her from the opposite direction and, without any warning or provocation, struck her violently in the face.

The blow was so intense that she collapsed to the ground, hitting her head on the pavement.

Greene fled westward while several bystanders rushed to assist the injured woman.

The entire event was captured by security cameras from the Calle Ocho Sports Bar and Grill, which is situated directly across from the site of the attack.

According to Local 10, the victim was taken to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with a fractured nose and a laceration on her left cheek that required stitches.

Eyewitness Account from Local Business Owner

Mónica Zapata, owner of the Calle Ocho Sports Bar and Grill, was among the first to reach the scene, describing what she witnessed with visible distress.

"There was chaos happening here. The lady was all bloody. Two women were trying to help her but seemed at a loss... she was lying on the ground and they couldn't get her up," Zapata told Telemundo 51.

The business owner called 911, brought a chair to the victim, and stayed by her side until paramedics arrived. Upon reviewing her security footage, she realized the severity of the incident.

"She was walking normally, calmly, and suddenly he hit her... he hit her so hard that it knocked her down," Zapata described.

Zapata also mentioned that the victim briefly lost consciousness: "He smashed her face and crushed her nose. The poor lady was in bad shape and losing consciousness."

Upon learning about the assailant's background, the business owner did not hide her outrage.

"No one deserves that. Apparently, this man has mental health issues and they keep letting him out. How long will this continue? How far are we going to go?" she questioned NBC Miami.

Arrest and Criminal Background of the Suspect

Miami Police arrested Greene approximately eight hours following the attack, after an officer familiar with the area recognized him from surveillance footage due to "previous incidents."

Greene was located a few blocks away, near Southwest 17th Avenue and Eighth Street.

What he said upon arriving at the Violent Crimes Unit was revealing: according to the police report cited by Local 10, the suspect "spontaneously declared that he was fine but had a bad day because he hit someone."

He later confessed to detectives that after the assault, he went home, took a nap, smoked marijuana, and was subsequently taken into custody.

Greene, who is listed as homeless in his arrest report, has a substantial criminal record: he was incarcerated from 2008 and released in 2012, rearrested in 2019 for physical assault, and again in February 2025 for petty theft. NBC Miami also reported that he served time in 2011 for burglary and trespassing.

Residents and local business owners stated that Greene was a familiar figure in the community.

"The neighbors say he hangs around here talking to himself," commented Zapata.

The suspect has been charged with aggravated battery and was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bail is pending. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

This incident adds to a series of random violent assaults that have caused alarm in South Florida throughout 2026, reigniting the discussion on handling individuals with potential mental health issues on Miami's streets and the justice system's effectiveness in preventing repeat offenses.
