Officer Erwin Fernández, a 13-year veteran of the Doral Police Department, was discovered dead on Wednesday morning inside his patrol car in southwest Miami-Dade County.
The discovery was made in a Ford Police Interceptor Utility parked on a gravel road among rural Redland farms, according to Telemundo 51.
Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a call shortly after 6:20 a.m. following a report of an unconscious man near SW 157th Avenue and SW 160th Street.
Fernández, whose Hispanic nationality has not been disclosed, was married and left behind three children aged 11, seven, and five, now orphaned by the tragedy.
He served as a school resource officer at Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, where he was known for his close relationship with both children and families within the community.
Fernández was also involved in the Doral Police Explorers program, a youth initiative focused on leadership and civic service.
