The age-old tale of David versus Goliath came to life in Florida when Zoey, a petite Yorkshire terrier weighing just nine pounds, miraculously survived an alligator attack near her family's home.
The harrowing incident took place in Englewood, close to Sarasota, as reported by WSVN 7News and local outlet SWFL.io. The six-year-old Zoey had briefly wandered away from her owner, Alice Trowbridge, and ventured into the backyard, approaching a water-adjacent wall.
The family was alarmed by Zoey's shrieks but initially couldn't locate her. Trowbridge's daughter, Laura Dujmovich, rushed to the wall after spotting movement illuminated by a neighboring home's light.
Zoey lay on the ground, bloody and severely wounded, yet still breathing. By the time the family reached her, the alligator had retreated.
"I thought I was about to lose my little dog and knew I had to act fast to save her life," Trowbridge recounted.
Neighbors were drawn by the commotion, but the family was already racing Zoey to a veterinary hospital.
A surveillance camera captured the frantic scene: first showing Trowbridge exiting the house and moments later, the vehicle speeding off towards the medical facility.
Reports indicate that Zoey suffered collapsed lungs, numerous puncture wounds, and several broken ribs. The extent of her injuries necessitated a complex surgery to reconstruct her chest cavity. Despite having just a 50% chance of survival, the resilient yorkie pulled through and returned home with her family.
"Everyone was amazed at how tough and resilient she is," said Dujmovich. Although her recovery will be lengthy, with ribs expected to heal in six to eight weeks, Zoey is on the mend.
Zoey holds a special place in her family. Trowbridge adopted her during the COVID-19 pandemic, crediting the pup with saving her during a challenging time. She describes Zoey as a spirited pet who loves watching TV and races into the room when she hears her favorite commercials.
For now, Zoey will focus on resting and regaining her strength, with her family expressing it simply: Zoey may be small, but she's proven to be mighty.
This remarkable story of survival adds Zoey to the list of pets who have endured dangerous encounters with alligators in Florida.
In September 2024, an 84-year-old woman and her dog, Queen, narrowly escaped an attack during a walk near their home in Fort Myers Beach. The elderly woman tossed her pet out of harm's way and fought off the alligator, sustaining bites on her leg and hands.
Another dramatic rescue unfolded in 2020 when Richard Wilbanks pulled his puppy, Gunner, from the jaws of an alligator that emerged from a pond in his backyard. The pup required a single stitch on his belly, while Wilbanks suffered hand injuries and received a tetanus shot.
However, not all such encounters have happy endings. In July 2023, a nine-foot alligator attacked and killed a dog near a pond in Deerfield Beach's Constitution Park. The reptile snatched the pet, swimming away before a specialist intervened.
A similar tragedy occurred in 2017 near Newnans Lake in Gainesville, where an alligator dragged a dog named Beignet into the water during a walk with a woman, her eight-year-old son, and another pet. Despite their efforts, the family couldn't prevent the fatal attack.
