This year, Miss Universe Cuba 2026 is set to make history with the introduction of a preliminary gala for the first time. Scheduled for August 18, this event will take place just two days before the grand finale on August 20.
The Dennis C. Moss Cultural Arts Center in Cutler Bay, located south of Miami, will host both events, as confirmed by the event's director in an interview with Noticias Telemundo.
Prince Julio César, a Venezuelan with 26 years of experience in the beauty pageant industry, hailed this development as a groundbreaking milestone. "It’s a historic achievement because it's the first time any of our pageants leading to Miss Universe has made such an innovation. We are following the exact format of Miss Universe," he stated.
Aligning with International Standards
By incorporating this preliminary round, Miss Universe Cuba now aligns with the international pageant standards, which also includes a qualifying round before the main event.
The 20 official contestants for this edition, unveiled during the Feather Fantasy Fashion Show on July 15 at the Miami Theatre, are undergoing rigorous training. Their schedule includes classes from Monday to Friday, six to ten in the evening, at the pageant headquarters.
"It's crucial for me to train them in diction, runway skills, protocol, and self-makeup. They need to have sculptural bodies because we are definitely in it to compete," explained Prince Julio César.
Support from the Cuban Exile Community
The pageant receives considerable backing from Cuban industries and businesses within the Florida exile community, a support publicly acknowledged by the director for sustaining "the most important queen for the Cuban people."
The grand finale's judging panel will feature renowned figures such as Alicia Machado and Giselle Blondet, who have confirmed their roles as judges for the event.
A Legacy of Achievement
The winner will succeed Lina Luaces Estefan, who reached the Top 12 at Miss Universe 2025 in Thailand, marking Cuba's best performance in the modern pageant era. In the inaugural 2024 edition, Marianela Ancheta made it to the Top 30 in Mexico City.
"Marianela Ancheta was in the Top 30 in 2024, Lina Luaces in the Top 12, and now we’re entering our third year, reaffirming this wonderful project, which took 57 years to become a reality in 2024," Prince Julio César recalled.
Symbolism and Representation
The symbolic weight of the pageant for the Cuban diaspora is central to the director’s vision. He shared a message from a supporter: "For many years, I had to support contestants from other countries. Thank you for giving us the chance to cheer for my own country in the Miss Universe edition."
Beyond physical appearance, Prince Julio César emphasized the qualities needed for the future representative: "She must be intelligent, have a project, and possess specific goals and objectives. Above all, she should be the voice of her community."
He added that "the stronghold of the Cuban community lies here in Florida," and the winner must convey "a clear and powerful message" tied to freedom.
Cuba has a rich history in international beauty pageants dating back to 1927, although such contests were banned on the island following the Revolution. The modern pageant operates from Miami, and this third edition, with its unprecedented preliminary gala, solidifies a project that the Cuban exile community has turned into a platform for identity and freedom.
