On Tuesday night, Cuba was rocked by a fresh wave of public dissent, with protests erupting in areas such as Marianao, La Liza, El Cerro, San José de Mayabeque, and Santiago de Cuba, as well as several neighborhoods in Havana.
These demonstrations coincided with persistent blackouts that have plunged the island into darkness. The focal point of the unrest was at the intersection of Egido and Gloria in Old Havana, where residents banged pots and pans while shouting "Freedom!" This act of defiance prompted a significant police presence and resulted in numerous arrests.
According to footage shared by CubaNet News, during the arrests, the community confronted the authorities, yelling "Abusers!"
José Batista Falcón, an exiled opposition figure and former political prisoner, shared videos from Marianao and Old Havana accompanied by a clear message: "Havana, Marianao, standing up to the government. Don't put up with their lies any longer; the streets are the only answer."
In one clip from Old Havana, a voice identifies the location: "This is here in Old Havana. Underground," referring to the historically government-shielded underground circuit that typically experiences fewer power outages than other city areas.
From exile, José Daniel Ferrer, leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba and former political prisoner, documented the protests and highlighted the regime's repressive tactics.
"The repressive forces arrive immediately to film, observe, and mark the key protest leaders, those who stand out the most, to later detain, imprison, or pursue them," Ferrer stated.
Ferrer emphasized that repression does not deter the demonstrators. "The people refuse to be intimidated. They are willing to continue risking and sacrificing themselves to achieve freedom, end oppression and misery, and put a stop to blackouts and hunger."
On August 2, another complete blackout of the National Electric System occurred, followed by another collapse during reconnection. This marks seven total blackouts in Cuba so far in 2026.
Ferrer concluded his message with a rallying cry that captures the spirit of those protesting despite the risks: "We must continue fighting against tyranny on all fronts, from Pinar del Río to Guantánamo, from Maisí to San Antonio."
