A year after the tragic death of 37-year-old Daylon Fleitas González, a Cuban resident of Hialeah, his family remains without closure.
Marking the somber anniversary on Monday, August 3rd, Daylon's brother, Marlon Fleitas, expressed to Univision the family's unwavering determination to see the perpetrator brought to justice.
On that day, Marlon and his mother started their morning by visiting Daylon's grave, honoring the father of three.
"This morning, I picked up my mom and we went to the cemetery. It's incredibly painful, what can I say?" Marlon shared, encapsulating the emotional turmoil felt by the entire family.
Enduring Grief and Unresolved Pain
Marlon recounted a recurring conversation with his mother, Carmen, highlighting their struggle to adapt to the void left by Daylon's absence.
"My mom asks if I've gotten used to it, and she tells me, 'I can't,' then asks, 'Can you?' And I tell her I can't either," he explained.
"The person responsible must face consequences, absolutely," Marlon insisted, referring to the primary suspect, Alfredo Carballo González.
Legal Proceedings Hit Roadblocks
The judicial process is plagued by delays, prolonging the family's agony.
During the latest hearing, a tentative trial date was set for August 2026, postponed from May due to disagreements between the defense and prosecution and the defendants' absence from a virtual hearing.
Carballo remains incarcerated in Miami-Dade County Jail without bail, charged with second-degree murder with a weapon, armed robbery—an additional charge from May 2026—and tampering with physical evidence.
His ex-partner, Ariely Álvarez Cabrera, faces charges of accessory after the fact and evidence tampering, and is under house arrest.
The Events of August 3, 2025
On that fateful day, Daylon left his Hialeah home to collect a $10,000 debt from Carballo, a close friend, and never returned.
Surveillance footage from a truck parking lot in Medley, Florida, captured the violent altercation and Carballo dragging Daylon's body into a blue recycling bin placed at the back of the victim's truck.
After the murder, Carballo used Daylon's phone to send WhatsApp messages to his wife, impersonating him and claiming he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and had fled to Mexico.
Daylon's body was discovered on August 9, 2025, inside the bin in a wooded area of southwest Miami-Dade, with multiple stab wounds.
Escape to Mexico and Extradition
Following the crime, Carballo and Álvarez Cabrera fled to Mexico with their five-month-old baby. Álvarez Cabrera was arrested there in September 2025 and extradited to Florida, where she was placed under house arrest after posting a $200,000 bond.
Carballo was apprehended on January 27, 2026, and extradited to Miami, where he pleaded not guilty on February 19, requesting a jury trial.
Daylon's mother, Carmen, expressed the family's perpetual sense of loss with each delay: "We will never have peace again because a part of our family was taken from us."
