Damián Valdez Galloso, charged with the murder of Cuban reggaeton artist José Manuel Carvajal Zaldívar, better known as El Taiger, made an appearance in the Miami-Dade County criminal court this Tuesday. The hearing confirmed that the trial, initially set for September, will not proceed as planned.
Journalist Javier Díaz from Univision reported that this was the first time Valdez physically appeared before the court while awaiting the final trial date.
Trial Rescheduled to 2027
The judge announced that the trial is likely to be held in February or March 2027, granting both parties an additional six months for preparation. This marks a significant shift from the original date of September 15, 2026.
A status hearing is scheduled for September 2, 2026, to assess case progress and discuss the potential inclusion of additional witnesses or experts.
Investigation Hurdles
During the session, several challenges hindering the process were disclosed.
The prosecution plans to call between 15 and 20 witnesses, according to Díaz.
The case is further complicated due to the involvement of three separate police departments — Miami, Hialeah, and Metro Dade — making coordination difficult. The Metro Dade department’s main evidence is still pending.
The defense attorney informed the judge that the process of taking statements had been delayed due to her secretary’s maternity leave, though she is expected to return next week.
Charges and Defense Strategy
Valdez Galloso is facing three charges: first-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Having pleaded not guilty, his defense argues self-defense, pointing to another individual as the shooter. The prosecution, having ruled out the death penalty, is seeking mandatory life imprisonment and has security camera footage, DNA samples, over 1,200 photographs, forensic documents, and a 911 call in which Valdez allegedly pretended to be a witness who discovered the vehicle with the victim.
“Justice for José” Rally
Outside the courthouse, family and supporters of the artist gathered with signs reading “Justice for José.” This gathering was organized by Teresa María Padrón, El Taiger's former manager and a vocal advocate for justice.
Univision Miami journalist Jorge Hernández highlighted this in a live broadcast, noting, “These are the signs outside the court saying justice for José. They don't even mention Tiger’s name, just José.”
Ex-Partner’s Statement
In the weeks leading up to the hearing, audio from a police interrogation of Ana María Pérez, Valdez's ex-partner, conducted two days after the murder, was released.
Pérez told detectives she found no signs of the attack at Valdez’s residence: “No, there was no blood or anything there.”
Regarding Valdez’s culpability, she was unequivocal: “I can't assure you whether he did it or not, because I didn't see it.”
She also recounted that, upon learning about the case from the news, she called Valdez and asked, “What did you do?” He then hung up, as reported by Telemundo 51.
El Taiger was shot on October 3, 2024, in Hialeah. Prosecutors allege that Valdez shot him in the forehead, transported his body in a black Mercedes-Benz, and left it in front of the Jackson Memorial Hospital. The 37-year-old artist succumbed to his injuries seven days later, leaving behind a dedicated fan base in Cuba, Miami, and worldwide.
The case will have its next procedural hearing on September 2, where the judge will review the investigation's status and determine if the trial will indeed commence in early 2027.
