The AARP, once known as the American Association of Retired Persons, has released its Spanish-language guide, "99 Smart Ways to Save Money." This practical resource is designed to assist families in maximizing their budgets, especially during a time when inflation continues to impact the finances of millions across the United States, with a notable effect on the Latino community.

The release of this guide is particularly timely. According to the Debt.com Budget Survey 2026, 48% of adults in the U.S. are living paycheck to paycheck. This figure had reached 69% in 2025, marking a record high in recent years.

Challenges Facing the Latino Community

The financial strain is even more significant among Latinos. The Hispanic Federation reports that 66% of Hispanic households are below the economic security threshold, and 53% feel their financial situation has worsened compared to the previous year.

Food inflation was reported at 4.2% year-over-year in May 2026, with grocery store prices rising 3.6% in April. The cost of home-cooked meals now stands 33% higher than it did seven years ago.

Tech-Savvy Financial Planning

Amidst these economic challenges, AARP spokesperson Gilberto Cabrera has highlighted the use of artificial intelligence as a valuable tool for household financial planning. "When planning your meals, use your preferred AI search engine to create a week of budget-friendly dinner or lunch menus tailored to your budget," Cabrera shared in a statement to Telemundo 51.

Practical Grocery Savings

AARP's guide offers specific tips for cutting grocery costs, such as:

  • Paying with cash at the supermarket to avoid overspending with credit cards.
  • Looking for manager's specials on fresh foods nearing their sell-by dates, which can be discounted by up to 70%—perfect for freezing or immediate use.
  • Keeping a price reference list on your phone to determine if a deal is genuinely worthwhile.
  • Taking advantage of senior discounts offered by some supermarkets during specific hours.
  • Utilizing the Flashfood app to purchase fresh items at a discount, particularly those nearing their expiration date.
  • Challenging yourself to spend less by inventorying your pantry once or twice a year and limiting weekly grocery spending to $20 for missing items.

Savings Beyond Groceries

The guide also suggests transportation savings strategies, such as exploring exits off the interstate to save on gas, self-replacing cabin and engine air filters, removing roof racks, and selecting low-rolling-resistance tires for better fuel efficiency.

For computer maintenance, AARP advises keeping computers cool by placing them on hard, flat surfaces. Additionally, they recommend uninstalling unused software and keeping up with updates.

Utilities and Energy Conservation

In terms of utilities, it's wise to examine your electricity bill, as nearly one in four people have found errors. Insulating water heater pipes, prepaying for electricity, using lower temperatures for laundry, and switching to WaterSense showerheads can save an average family 2,700 gallons of water annually and 11 days of electricity.

Financial Challenges in Florida

In Florida, where a significant portion of the Cuban and Latino community resides, financial challenges are particularly acute. By the end of 2024, the average rent in Miami was around $2,373 per month, while the city's median income was only $57,157 annually, well below the $95,000 needed for comfortable rent payments.

Additionally, homeowners' insurance premiums exceed $4,000 annually in many areas, based on the AARP Florida Vital Voices survey. This mounting pressure is concerning for Florida's senior citizens, with 93% of those over 45 prioritizing sufficient retirement income, according to the same survey.
