The Cuban Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) revealed on Thursday that work activities across the nation will be suspended on July 25, 26, and 27 in observance of National Rebellion Day, as reported by the state-run Granma.
This pause in work coincides with the 73rd anniversary of the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, events that occurred on July 26, 1953, which the Cuban regime regards as the symbolic start of the Revolution.
This year's national central ceremony will be held in Pinar del Río, chosen as the venue for the July 26 event by the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba on June 27.
The MTSS clarified that this work suspension does not apply to a wide array of sectors deemed essential: sugar harvest and urgent agricultural tasks, continuous production industries, indispensable loading and unloading operations, transportation, hospitals, pharmacies, fuel distribution, funeral services, cemeteries, lodging, tourism, communications, radio and television, basic public services, and fishing.
Employees in these sectors required to work during these three days will receive double pay for all hours worked, in accordance with Article 111 of the Labor Code.
The ministry also specified that those currently on paid annual vacation, unpaid leave, social security subsidies, or salary guarantees will "continue receiving said treatment" without any change.
A particular aspect of the official communication addressed this week's calendar: July 26 falls on a Sunday, which under different circumstances might lead to moving the day off to the following Monday.
Nevertheless, the MTSS emphatically stated that "there is no need to move the rest day from July 26, 2026, because despite coinciding with the usual Sunday rest, the following day is also a public holiday."
This three-day work suspension formula—July 25, 26, and 27—is a longstanding practice repeated annually by the regime.
The same approach was implemented in 2025 and 2022 with the same exceptions and the same salary arrangements. The exception was 2023, when the regime declared holidays from July 25 to 28, extending the break to four days.
Pinar del Río hosts the central event for the fourth time in history, having done so in 1976, 2000, and 2017.
The PCC justified the selection based on the province's results in tobacco production, renewable energies, and other economic and social indicators, although the daily reality for Cubans in that and other provinces remains marked by prolonged blackouts and shortages of food and medicine.
