Completed entirely during the final against Spain, the artwork serves as a tribute to the team and a gesture of gratitude toward the country that welcomed him over a decade ago.
Roche, who has lived in Pilar, a suburb of Buenos Aires, for 11 years, began the painting at the start of the match and finished it precisely at the final whistle, without adding a single stroke afterward.
The Inspiration Behind "The Fan and His Star"
The piece, titled "The Fan and His Star," draws inspiration from Argentina's comeback victory against England on July 15, secured by goals from Enzo Fernández in the 85th minute and Lautaro Martínez in the 92nd, propelling the team to the final.
"I wanted to dedicate this painting to our national team, created from start to finish during the match, capturing Messi's last World Cup and the spirit and determination of the Argentine team, which always carries a star within," explained Roche.
He shared the painting on his Instagram account, @roche_tattoo, accompanied by a message summarizing the bond he has formed with Argentina: "We don't wear it on the jersey (yet), but always in the heart. Thank you, Argentina, for making me part of this madness. This Cuban loves you."
A Deeper Meaning Beyond the Game
According to Roche, the painting transcends the sporting results. "I realized I needed to create something that expressed more than just a result. If Argentina had won the World Cup, a new star would have been forever on the jersey; but the spirit, heart, and passion of this team already burn and will continue to burn eternally in the hearts of those who feel these colors," he expressed.
For Roche, the painting also holds a deeply personal significance. "Argentina opened its doors to me, and this painting is my way of thanking and honoring the country I now call home," he noted.
His intention was never solely to celebrate a victory but to pay tribute "to the heart, identity, and dedication of a group that once again unified an entire nation."
