In a dramatic incident last Tuesday, a driver from Palm Beach County was arrested following a high-speed chase exceeding 100 mph along State Road 710 in Indiantown, Florida. The Martin County Sheriff's Office provided details of the event.
The situation unfolded when an officer observed Markell Travon Tillman, 33, speeding at 84 mph in a 45 mph zone while driving a 2024 gray Kia SUV. Despite the officer's attempt to stop him, Tillman ignored emergency lights and sirens, accelerating past 100 mph. He dangerously overtook vehicles by crossing double yellow lines and diverted onto the grassy shoulder to bypass slower traffic, as per the arrest report.
Due to safety concerns, the ground officer discontinued the pursuit near SW Tommy Clements Street after noting the vehicle's license plate. Meanwhile, the MCSO maintained aerial surveillance as Tillman headed towards Palm City, seemingly convinced he had eluded capture.
Unbeknownst to the driver, law enforcement had prepared ahead. They deployed spike strips on Martin Highway near Allapattah Road, deflating the Kia's tires and bringing the vehicle to a halt just short of Interstate 95. Tillman exited the car and attempted to flee on foot into a grassy area, but bodycam footage captured officers subduing and arresting him just a few feet from the vehicle.
Aerial footage from the MCSO helicopter along with bodycam video documented the entire sequence from chase to arrest. Notably, the detained Tillman wore shorts emblazoned with the phrases "Don't wear out before you reach the top" and "Go hard or go home." The sheriff's office highlighted this irony in their statement.
"This time, he didn’t live up to the slogans on his shorts. In fact, he wore out and never got out of Martin County. Markell went too far and ended up with a new address: the Martin County Jail," the statement read.
Tillman is facing a slew of charges including fleeing and eluding, aggravated fleeing with injury or damage, driving over 100 mph, and operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked license. Additionally, he had an active warrant from Jefferson County on drug-related charges.
Sheriff John Budensiek expressed his disbelief, stating, "That he would drive like this, already having multiple warrants and without a valid license, is beyond my comprehension."
The arrest took place during Florida's Operation Southern Slow Down, a crackdown on speeding conducted from July 13 to 18, involving over 490 agencies from five Southeastern states, resulting in more than 7,000 speeding tickets in Florida.
The SR-710 has been the site of 31 fatal accidents causing 39 deaths over the past decade, with at least six fatalities occurring just between June and July 2026 alone. Sheriff Budensiek has urged the Florida Department of Transportation to expand the highway, though construction isn't expected to begin until 2027.
"This isn’t just an occasional accident," warned the sheriff. "We have a consistent pattern of fatalities on this road."
