On Saturday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made an official announcement from the State Department, celebrating the arrival of Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, a Cuban artist and co-founder of the San Isidro Movement, to Miami. Otero Alcántara had been imprisoned for five years by the Cuban regime.
Rubio condemned the regime as "illegitimate" and stated that the artist's only "offense" was his refusal to be silenced and his use of art to demand fundamental freedoms, which have been denied to Cubans for nearly seven decades.
"For daring to envision a free Cuba, he faced harassment, detention, and imprisonment repeatedly, but today he finds himself in exile," Rubio expressed in his statement.
The Secretary of State also underscored the impact of the San Isidro Movement, describing it as "a beacon of hope for a generation of Cubans unwilling to live under tyranny."
Additionally, Rubio highlighted how the regime's fear of citizens speaking the truth about communism and repression was evident in the imprisonment of Otero Alcántara.
