Edgar Olivas, 40, has been taken into custody and charged with the murder of Walter Castañeda, a 64-year-old Hispanic business owner who was fatally shot during a robbery as he closed his store in Miami's Little Havana on October 1, 2021.

According to reports from Telemundo 51, Olivas faces charges of first-degree murder and armed robbery. He was booked into Miami-Dade's Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center following his extradition from Orlando, where the local police arrested him after discovering an active warrant issued in December 2021.

The tragic event unfolded at approximately 8:15 PM on October 1, 2021, as Castañeda was locking up his Boost Mobile store located at 443 Northwest 12th Avenue.

Details of the Crime

The arrest warrant details that the assailant approached armed, demanded everything in Spanish, grabbed a black bag, and fled to a waiting vehicle.

Castañeda drew a revolver, and both men exchanged gunfire. Tragically, a bullet struck Castañeda in the abdomen. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries that same night.

Investigation Leading to Arrest

A comprehensive investigation that included surveillance footage from a nearby gas station, motel records, phone data, and social media posts led to Olivas' arrest.

Detectives tracked a white Honda Civic captured on cameras near the crime scene, which had been reported stolen.

"We were able to place him at the scene of the incident. Through conversations with other individuals, they identified him as the assailant who shot and killed the victim," stated a Miami Police spokesperson.

Judicial Proceedings and Family's Reaction

Judge Mindy Glazer completely denied Olivas bail during his initial court appearance.

Medalit Castañeda, the victim's widow, spoke about the five years of unbearable grief endured by their family, which includes two children and seven grandchildren. "I was waiting for him to come home together, as always, but he never arrived," she lamented.

While the arrest doesn't bring back her husband, Medalit expressed that the family now clings to the hope of achieving justice for this heartbreaking loss.
