Juan Alexander Padrón García, known in literary circles as Álex Padrón, has died at the age of 52, leaving a profound emptiness in Cuban literature both on the island and abroad. This sad news, unveiled this Friday, marks a significant loss for the creative community.

The announcement was confirmed by fellow Cuban writer, Amir Valle, founder of Ilíada Ediciones. Valle shared his grief in a heartfelt Facebook post, stating, "Álex Padrón departs at 52, at the peak of his creative prowess, leaving me speechless."

Born in Havana in 1973, Padrón crafted a diverse and respected body of work over two decades, encompassing crime fiction, science fiction, poetry, and journalism. His unique voice became a cornerstone of contemporary Cuban storytelling.

The Legacy of a Crime Fiction Pioneer

Padrón's contributions to Cuban crime fiction were particularly noteworthy, with works such as Matadero (2018), La herencia de los patriarcas (2019), Tres lunas (2020), Mon amie la rose (2021), and Los enterradores (2023). These novels formed a compelling body of work, which Valle described as "profoundly dark, intensely Cuban, and indisputably excellent."

Valle firmly dismissed any notion that Padrón was merely beginning to establish himself in the genre. "Álex Padrón is, unquestionably, and will remain, an essential figure in Cuban crime fiction," wrote the Berlin-based editor, who published Mon amie la rose and La balada de Xander Sirius through Ilíada Ediciones.

Diverse Talents Beyond Crime Fiction

In addition to his crime novels, Padrón was equally dedicated to science fiction. He won the Grand Prize at the Ibero-American Terra Ignota Contest in 2004 with his story Reversión, and later published La balada de Xander Sirius in 2023 and La Escuadra negra in 2025. His accolades include the 2020 Premio Hidra—shared with Yadira Albet—for Guadaña Universal: el códice, as well as the 2021 Juventud Técnica Prize and the 2022 Óscar Hurtado Prize.

Outside the realm of fiction, Padrón served as a journalist, screenwriter, and editor for the Cuban Institute of Cultural Research Juan Marinello. He also worked as an editorial advisor for Atmósfera Literaria in Spain. Just months before his passing, he co-authored and edited the Catauro de seres míticos y legendarios en Cuba, an encyclopedia of mythical and legendary beings in Cuba.

Remembering a Literary Giant

Amir Valle reflected on his personal connection with Padrón, describing him as "a special human being, a good man, a friend to his friends, and someone always willing to share his literary knowledge with younger writers."

Padrón's untimely death at 52 also brings to mind the loss of another Cuban literary figure, Guillermo Vidal, who died at the same age in 2004 while at the height of his creative powers. "It reminds me of the loss of another great writer, Guillermo Vidal, at the same age," Valle reminisced.

This loss adds to a series of recent bereavements in Cuban literature. On July 10, writer and independent journalist Víctor Manuel Domínguez passed away, and in November 2025, Julio Travieso Serrano, the 2021 National Literature Prize winner, also died. In December 2022, Ignacio Cárdenas Acuña, considered the father of Cuban crime fiction, died at 98 in Miami.

Valle concluded his tribute by reflecting on the honor of having worked with Padrón: "I cherish the privilege of having him in my editorial catalog, a dream I couldn't achieve in Cuba—to have my own publishing house to support great writers like Álex Padrón."

Details regarding the cause of Padrón's death and his funeral arrangements have not been disclosed yet. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.
