The documentary "Cuba's Eternal Night" emerged victorious with the Grand Prize Anthem, the highest accolade of the festival, as well as the Best Documentary Feature award at the Anthem Film Festival 2026, held from July 9-12 in Nevada.

This announcement carried a significant symbolic weight, coinciding with the fifth anniversary of the historic July 11, 2021 protests in Cuba—the largest wave of anti-government demonstrations on the island since 1959.

"It is a tremendous honor for us to announce that 'Cuba's Eternal Night' has been awarded the Grand Prize Anthem, the festival's highest honor, along with the Best Documentary Feature award at the 2026 Anthem Film Festival in Las Vegas," director Jordan Allott expressed through his social media channels.

Allott emphasized the collective nature of this award: "This recognition belongs to our dedicated team and, most importantly, to the courageous Cuban people who entrusted us to share their stories with the world."

The filmmaker also underscored the timing of the award: "It is particularly meaningful that these honors were announced on the fifth anniversary of the historic July 11, 2021 protests in Cuba, a pivotal moment for both this documentary and Cuba's recent history."

The Anthem Film Festival, established in 2011, is renowned as the world's largest libertarian film festival, celebrating freedom, awareness, and human dignity. Over its 15-year history, it has screened more than 300 films to an audience of around 3,000 attendees.

The documentary is the culmination of three years of filming and editing under Allott's direction, who previously gained notoriety from the Cuban regime with his documentary "Oscar's Cuba," about dissident Oscar Elías Biscet. In "Cuba's Eternal Night," the director has crafted a 66-minute narrative that captures the stories of five Cubans facing repression, food and medicine shortages, and the massive exodus triggered by the July 11 events.

Among the voices featured in the film are July 11 protesters Carlos Raúl Macías López, Camila Acosta, and Ariadna Mena Rubio, as well as Alberto Reyes and Emilio Román, whose relatives were detained during the protests in La Güinera. Independent journalist Acosta was detained and placed under house arrest for over ten months for covering the July 11 events, only to be released in May 2022.

Cuban journalist Yoe Suárez, the field producer for the project, celebrated the award on social media: "Days after commemorating the 5th anniversary of July 11, the feature film 'Cuba's Eternal Night' has just received the Grand Prize at the most significant libertarian film festival in Las Vegas." Suárez also highlighted that the film allowed him to "speak with exiles from various regions and university students from the United States and Colombia about the reality of living under a socialist tyranny."

The producer reserved special praise for the director: "Jordan deserves applause for the dedication I witnessed during the three years of filming and editing; this material is crucial for the memory of a captive nation still awaiting the end of the night."

The documentary had its world premiere on April 10, 2025, at the Koubek Theater in Miami-Dade, as part of the 42nd Miami International Film Festival, and was subsequently shown in Madrid and Washington D.C.

This international recognition arrives amid a deep crisis in Cuba. The July 11 protests, which began in San Antonio de los Baños, spread to over 40 cities, driven by power outages, widespread shortages, and demands for basic freedoms. Five years later, the organization Justicia 11J reports 775 political prisoners in Cuba, 338 of whom were imprisoned specifically for participating in those demonstrations, while the regime has only released 20 since March 2026.
