A tragic incident claimed the life of Yuviosmar Galindo Cardona, a 25-year-old Cuban, last Friday following a workplace accident at a construction site in Providence, East Bank Demerara, Guyana.

According to reports from Kaieteur News, the accident occurred around 9:45 a.m. while Galindo Cardona was handling a high-pressure hose attached to a cement pumping machine.

The Guyana Police Force, through the Regional Division 4B, stated that Galindo Cardona lost control of the equipment, causing the hose to swing violently and strike him on the head, resulting in critical injuries.

His coworkers immediately rushed him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead shortly after his arrival.

The young man's body was taken to a funeral home, where it will stay until an autopsy is conducted. Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Safety Concerns Amidst Guyana's Economic Boom

As reported by iNews Guyana, this incident occurs during a national safety campaign by the Ministry of Labor and Human Resource Planning, emphasizing safer and healthier construction work environments.

Cuban Community in Guyana Faces Another Tragedy

The death of Galindo Cardona adds to a troubling pattern of Cuban fatalities in Guyana in recent months, linked to both workplace accidents and violent incidents.

Recent cases include Dailén Paneque Gomes, a 26-year-old allegedly killed by her partner, a Guyanese police officer who confessed to the crime. Other notable deaths include Wilber Fonseca Fonseca, found dead in June under unclear circumstances; Dainier Vegas Infante, 23, shot in Georgetown; Yohanis Urquiaga Zulueta, 46, who died in a traffic accident; and Dayrovis Martínez Mendoza, 24, who perished in September 2025 after a concrete wall collapsed at another construction site.

These incidents occur against the backdrop of Guyana's robust economic growth, driven by its burgeoning oil industry, which has increased the demand for foreign labor, especially in construction, welding, and masonry.

Providence, the site of Galindo Cardona's accident, is one of the country's bustling construction zones, fueled by new housing and infrastructure projects, including the expansion of the road connecting Georgetown to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
