The former ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who played a pivotal role in turning the Gulf nation into a diplomatic and economic powerhouse, passed away on Sunday at the age of 74. This was confirmed by the Qatar News Agency (QNA), although the cause of death was not disclosed.

In response to the news, Cuba's leader, Miguel Díaz-Canel, conveyed his condolences, describing the ex-leader as a "distinguished statesman" and a "dear friend of the Cuban people and the Commander in Chief," referring to the close bond he shared with Fidel Castro.

“With deep sorrow, we learned of the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Father Emir of the State of Qatar. He was a prominent statesman who played a decisive role in the development of the modern and thriving State of Qatar,” Díaz-Canel wrote in a thread on the social media platform X.

The Cuban leader also extended the regime's condolences to the current Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as well as to his family, the government, and the Qatari people.

“Cuba shares the grief that envelops the friendly Qatari people and extends heartfelt condolences to the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, his family, the government, and that brotherly nation,” he added.

Additionally, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz praised the former emir’s efforts in strengthening the ties between the two countries. “We will always remember his contribution to the development of friendship relations between our nations,” he also posted on X.

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla echoed these sentiments on X, highlighting the former Qatari ruler's influence on bilateral relations.

Qatar's Transformation Under His Leadership

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani led Qatar from 1995 until 2013, seizing power in a palace coup against his father. During his 18-year tenure, he initiated sweeping economic reforms and elevated Qatar's stature on the global stage.

Under his guidance, the Al Jazeera network was launched in 1996, the Qatar Investment Authority, one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, was established, and the nation secured the hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In a surprising move in June 2013, he voluntarily abdicated in favor of his son, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who was then 33 years old, an uncommon practice among Gulf monarchies.

A Close Bond with Cuba

Díaz-Canel's mention of the "Commander in Chief" alludes to the personal connection the former emir had with Fidel Castro, which was foundational to the ties between Havana and Doha.

Cuba and Qatar initiated diplomatic relations in 1989, and Qatar became the first Gulf nation to open an embassy in Havana in 2001.

The bilateral cooperation has largely focused on the healthcare sector. Cuba manages the Dukhan Hospital with approximately 500 healthcare professionals, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Henry Reeve medical brigade treated over 270,000 patients in Qatar.

The relationship between the two governments was further solidified in November 2023 when Díaz-Canel visited Qatar during a Middle Eastern tour, which saw both sides advancing cooperation projects in areas like health, tourism, and investments.

Following the announcement of the former emir’s death, Qatar declared four days of national mourning to honor the man who was instrumental in shaping a significant chapter in the country's modern history.
