On Friday, Republican Senator Tom Cotton issued a strong call for the Cuban regime to release all political prisoners as the fifth anniversary of the July 11, 2021, protests approaches. Cotton expressed his demands in a message posted on X, emphasizing the significance of the upcoming date.
“Tomorrow marks five years since thousands of courageous Cubans peacefully protested against the tyrannical regime. The regime should seize the opportunity today to free all political prisoners,” Cotton declared.
The senator further stated that “demanding freedom is only a crime to those whose power it threatens” and reiterated his support for those who continue to fight for a brighter future in Cuba.
This recent message is the third Cotton has shared in less than a week regarding the situation on the island. On July 6, he described July 11 as “the outcry of thousands of ordinary Cubans” who took to the streets to demand basic freedoms after enduring decades of repression under what he termed a “brutal Marxist regime.”
Just two days later, he urged the Trump administration to “tighten the screws” on the regime and its foreign enablers.
International Pressure on Havana Intensifies
The senator’s appeal comes amidst mounting international pressure on Havana. On July 7, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, displayed photographs of Cuban political prisoners, including Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel “Osorbo” Castillo Pérez, before the General Assembly. He accused the GAESA conglomerate of managing an $18 billion fund without a single cent benefiting the Cuban people.
Otero Alcántara’s situation has drawn significant international attention this week. The artist and leader of the San Isidro Movement was removed from Guanajay prison on July 7 by State Security agents without notifying his family, despite his five-year sentence ending on July 9.
Amnesty International formally denounced his forced disappearance on the same day, demanding his “immediate and unconditional” release.

The overall situation for political prisoners in Cuba remains dire. Human rights organizations reported that as of May 2026, a total of 1,281 individuals were detained for political reasons: 785 in prisons and 475 under house arrest or forced detention.

The regime released 2,010 prisoners on April 2, 2026, as a so-called “humanitarian gesture,” but specifically excluded those convicted of crimes against authority, the same legal charge used to criminalize the July 11 demonstrators.

The anniversary also arrives amid a severe energy crisis in Cuba: June 2026 saw 107 protests across the country, nearly doubling the previous record, and on July 6, the seventh total disconnection of the National Electroenergetic System occurred within 18 months.
In Miami, the Cuban Freedom March organization has called for a gathering this Saturday under the slogan “Actions, Not Words.”
“The Cuban people—whose spirit is epitomized by the July 11 movement—deserve a chance at freedom,” Cotton wrote on July 8, encapsulating a week where international pressure on the regime continued to escalate.
