On Thursday, the five-year sentence of artist and political prisoner Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara officially concludes. However, the founder of the San Isidro Movement has been missing since Tuesday, July 7. On that day, State Security agents removed him from the maximum-security prison in Guanajay, located in Artemisa, without disclosing his destination to his family.
The only information about his transfer came from fellow inmates, not from the regime. Since then, no one close to him has been able to see or speak with him. He is not at his home in the El Cerro neighborhood, in San Isidro, nor at any residence of close acquaintances.
On Wednesday, State Security officials assured his family they would bring him to his El Cerro home for a visit, but that promise was never fulfilled.
The Uncertainty Surrounding Otero Alcántara's Disappearance
Activist Anamely Ramos was clear on Wednesday, stating, "At this moment, Luis Manuel is missing. He is not free. He is not released. He is in the hands of State Security somewhere in Havana."
Yanelys Núñez, who manages the artist's work, agreed: "Until we have firsthand news, we consider him missing." She emphasized, "It's unacceptable for the regime to remove someone from political imprisonment and make them disappear."
Núñez did not rule out the possibility of the regime forcing him into exile, a tactic used against other dissidents. "It's possible because they don't want Luis on the streets, especially in a Havana that is completely mobilized by its citizens," she noted. The artist's circle has been trying to arrange a parole process to the United States, acknowledging that "there is no other option for Luis Manuel within Cuba."
Background of Otero Alcántara's Imprisonment
Otero Alcántara was arrested on July 11, 2021, as he attempted to join the 11J protests. In June 2022, he was sentenced to five years in prison for charges of "insulting national symbols," "contempt," and "public disorder." The regime did not grant him any reduction for good behavior nor did it include him in the presidential pardon of April 2026.
On Thursday, a poster titled "Luisma Day 0," a redesign of an original by Alfredo Rostgaard from 1972, created by Lilliam Dooley, circulated on social media as a symbol of the situation: a figure with broken chains above and intact chains below. The pressing question that remains unanswered officially is: Where is Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara?
