At just five months old, Marcos Sánchez Méndez remains blissfully unaware that he has spent the majority of his young life in a hospital ward.

Since February 25, the infant from Guásimas, a town in the Cárdenas municipality, has been hospitalized at Matanzas Pediatric Hospital due to a medical emergency that nearly claimed his life.

His tale is heart-wrenching, not only because of his struggle but also due to the unyielding strength of his mother, Roxana. For over four months, she has practically lived in the hospital, enduring sleepless nights in a chair, her body aching, and her heart torn between Marcos and her three other young children at home.

Marcos, affectionately called "Marquitos," appeared healthy at birth and was discharged without any signs of trouble. However, when he was merely 12 days old, Roxana noticed something was amiss: Marcos cried incessantly, refused breast milk, and exhibited stomach discomfort.

“He’s usually such a glutton,” Roxana recalls with a mix of love and worry. Then, the seizures began.

“Those were terrifying moments; I could only pray and entrust my child to the doctors’ expertise,” Roxana recounts from the Intermediate Therapy room where she has spent more than four months.

Medical tests diagnosed him with an intraventricular hemorrhage caused by a malformation of the Galen vein, leading to obstructive hydrocephalus.

Overcoming Medical Challenges

Dr. Zuraida Rivera Díaz, a pediatric specialist overseeing his case, explains that the severity of his condition necessitated two and a half months of ventilation, culminating in a tracheotomy.

Additionally, Marcos suffered from severe nutritional deterioration exacerbated by lactose intolerance.

Dr. Rivera Díaz recalls those weeks as a relentless battle: “It was a struggle that kept the entire medical team on edge until he began gaining weight, making us feel like we had won a significant victory.”

Despite these challenges, Dr. Rivera Díaz is optimistic: “He’ll soon be able to return home and lead a normal life.”

The Journey Towards Recovery

Roxana describes the early months as filled with uncertainty and fear for her son’s health. “He was in critical condition and unresponsive,” she recounts.

Currently, Marquitos is undergoing rehabilitation with physiotherapists. Their immediate goal is decannulation, or removing the tracheotomy tube. He is now able to eat small portions, a milestone his mother celebrates as a significant triumph.

Meanwhile, Roxana endures endless days, her physical pain a constant companion. “I feel like I no longer have ribs or a neck,” she jokes, though her sigh reveals the effort it takes to maintain her smile.

The situation is particularly heartrending because her other three children, waiting back in Guásimas, have seen little of their mother during these months. Roxana manages brief visits but never stays away from the hospital for more than a night.

Having turned a hospital chair into her temporary home, Roxana dreams of the day her son can leave the hospital behind. “Life has tested me with this challenge, but I’ve never felt alone. Thanks to the unwavering support of so many people here, my little Marquitos will overcome and return home to his siblings,” she states.

Facing Adversity in Challenging Conditions

The Matanzas Pediatric Hospital has faced significant structural issues in recent months, from publicly reported hygiene problems to a nearby waste dump that raised health concerns.

In such a challenging environment, the journey of this family takes on even greater significance.
