Seven Cuban Players Chosen for 2026 MLB All-Star Game

In a significant representation for Cuba, seven baseball players—Yordan Álvarez, Andy Pagés, Aroldis Chapman, Raisel Iglesias, Randy Arozarena, Yandy Díaz, and Miguel Vargas—will take the field at the 96th edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. This year, the event is scheduled for July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Major League Baseball organization announced the finalized rosters for this mid-summer classic last Saturday, revealing an impressive lineup that includes seven players born in Cuba. This marks the second-highest participation of Cuban players in the history of the event.

Cuban Players Make Their Mark

Among the seven selected, they represent five American League teams and two from the National League. This diverse group includes three first-time All-Stars—Pagés, Iglesias, and Vargas—and seasoned players like Álvarez, who is making his fourth appearance, Chapman with nine, and Arozarena with three.

Álvarez and Pagés: Setting the Stage

In the American League, Álvarez will start as the designated hitter, marking his fourth All-Star appearance. Representing the Houston Astros, he is having an extraordinary season with 29 home runs, 67 RBIs, and a .324 batting average over 89 games. His performance positions him as a frontrunner for the Most Valuable Player award and a contender for the Triple Crown. On the night of his All-Star selection, Álvarez hit a two-run homer to help defeat the Rays 10-8.

Representing the National League, Pagés, hailing from Havana, will debut as an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers. With a .269 average, 16 home runs, and 62 RBIs in 88 games, he joins a prestigious group of Dodgers outfielders who started the All-Star Game before turning 26, including Yasiel Puig and Cody Bellinger.

Elite Relievers: Chapman and Iglesias

Chapman, now 38 and a member of the Boston Red Sox, earns his ninth All-Star nod, the highest among active Cuban players. He's recorded a 2.10 ERA and 17 saves this season and has recently set a new MLB record for strikeouts by a reliever, surpassing Hoyt Wilhelm's longstanding record with 1,364 strikeouts.

After 12 years in the major leagues, Iglesias is making his All-Star debut with the Atlanta Braves. Earlier this season, he expressed doubt about ever making an All-Star appearance, but his 1.53 ERA, 17 saves, and a streak of 35 consecutive saves—the longest active streak in MLB—demonstrate his exceptional performance.

American League's Cuban Reserves

Arozarena will make his third All-Star appearance as an outfielder for the Seattle Mariners. In 82 games, he has a .287 average with nine home runs and 41 RBIs, and he becomes the 15th player in Mariners history with multiple All-Star selections.

Díaz, leading the American League with a .325 batting average, will attend his second All-Star Game as the designated hitter for the Tampa Bay Rays. Besides his average, he ranks highly in on-base percentage, hits, and OPS.

Vargas, the son of legendary Cuban player Lázaro Vargas, debuts as a third baseman for the Chicago White Sox. After a challenging start in Chicago, the former Dodgers prospect is enjoying his best season yet in 2026 with 20 home runs, 56 RBIs, and a 136 wRC+.

If Cuban-American Sal Stewart of the Cincinnati Reds, born in Miami, is included, the count of players with Cuban heritage rises to eight, matching the historical record set in 2023.

The 2026 All-Star Game highlights the ongoing influence of Cuban baseball talent in Major League Baseball, as players from the island continue to leave a significant mark on the global stage of professional baseball.
