During a live broadcast on Fox News with Sean Hannity, DeSantis drew a stark contrast between the Founding Fathers' conservatism and what he termed as the regressive socialism of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Speaking from Keystone, South Dakota, DeSantis was unequivocal about the source of rights: "They come from God, period. There's no debate about that. Government must be limited or nonexistent. If it exists, then we must always strive for limited government."

The governor specifically targeted Mamdani, the socialist mayor who had criticized immigration officers, Elon Musk, and oligarchs in a New York City Hall speech the previous day. "When I see the Mamdanis of the world, they are essentially offering these ideas. They claim to be progressive. In reality, they're regressive. These are concepts the Founding Fathers rejected," DeSantis asserted on Hannity's show from Mount Rushmore.

Mamdani assumed office as New York City mayor on January 1, 2026, after winning the November 4, 2025, election with 50.4% of the vote. A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, he is the first Muslim and South Asian-descendant mayor of the city, and the youngest since 1892. Upon taking office, he declared, "I was elected as a democratic socialist, and I will govern as a democratic socialist."

Mount Rushmore also served as the backdrop for a speech by Donald Trump on the night of July 3, where he labeled communism as "the greatest threat to our country, even more than World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, or 9/11."
