The medical community in Camagüey mourns the loss of Dr. Julieth Pérez Tato, a pulmonologist at Amalia Simoni Hospital, who passed away on Friday at the very institution where she practiced her profession.

The hospital announced her death via an official Facebook post, expressing "deep sorrow" and emphasizing that "her professional and human dedication leaves a legacy of service and commitment to the community's health."

While the hospital's official statement did not disclose the cause of her death, a responder to the post revealed it was due to an ectopic pregnancy.

An ectopic pregnancy is a critical medical condition where the embryo implants outside the uterus, typically in the fallopian tubes.

In a subsequent comment, the hospital mentioned that her body would be taken to La Caridad Funeral Home for a farewell ceremony, inviting staff to join in honoring her memory.

"Today, our Great House is shrouded in grief. A young professional leaves us, having set an example of dedication, discipline, and love for the health of her people," the institution noted.

The news sparked a flood of tributes on social media from friends, former classmates, and those who knew Dr. Pérez Tato from childhood. One university friend shared, "I truly can't believe it, you were so full of life and excelled in everything. You devoted your life to health, and now you're gone too soon."

A colleague and professor reminisced about their shared experiences, highlighting the impact Julieth made: "You were an outstanding student. You left us as a young woman, but your mark on Camagüey's medical field and in our hearts endures."

The professor also mentioned their time together during an intensive therapy diploma program completed in 2017 in Venezuela.

A childhood friend recalled the last time she saw Julieth, when the doctor treated her father at Amalia Simoni Hospital: "I felt nostalgic reconnecting with you and knowing my father was in the care of such a capable professional."

Condolences poured in for her family members, Carlitos, Cristina, and her sister Jenny, as friends and acquaintances offered their sympathies.

Dr. Pérez Tato's passing occurs amid a persistent collapse of the healthcare system in Camagüey. Earlier this year, a 26-year-old woman died at Manuel Ascunce Hospital due to the unavailability of the vasopressor norepinephrine, and in March, a 10-month-old infant died without receiving necessary surgery due to resource shortages in the province.

The lack of essential medications, surgical supplies, and specialized personnel exacerbates the challenges faced in obstetric emergencies like the one that reportedly claimed the life of this dedicated young doctor.
