Jason Baró Benavides, a dedicated student from the Fernando Alonso National Ballet School in Cuba, has been confirmed as a finalist in the 15th Moscow International Ballet Competition. This prestigious event, held at the Bolshoi Theatre, is renowned as one of the most significant platforms for classical dancers worldwide.

Esteemed as the "Olympics of Ballet," the competition's jury selected the talented Cuban among the performers advancing to the final round, which runs from June 25 to July 5, 2026. This year, the event has attracted 158 dancers representing 30 nations.

Joining Jason in this high-stakes competition is Helen Azurmendi Ríos, also a student at the Cuban school. Together, they perform classical pas de deux from "Esmeralda" and "The Black Swan" from "Swan Lake," alongside a contemporary piece choreographed by Norge Cedeño and Thais Suárez, the founders of Otro Lado Dance Company in Cuba.

The Fernando Alonso National Ballet School expressed their pride on social media, highlighting the exceptional performance of both students: "Jason’s performance, along with our fellow student Helen Azurmendi Ríos, has been commendable in this competition, regarded as the Ballet Olympics."

Accompanying these young dancers in Moscow is their instructor, Dani Hernández, providing them with guidance and support during their time abroad.

International Recognition for Cuban Ballet

The panel of judges for this 15th edition is chaired by Svetlana Zakharova, a leading figure of the Bolshoi Ballet, and includes representatives from Serbia, China, Brazil, Belarus, South Africa, and Turkey. Additionally, Viengsay Valdés, director of the National Ballet of Cuba, serves on the jury, underscoring the international esteem held for Cuban ballet.

This year's edition pays homage to Yuri Grigorovich, who presided over the competition's jury for over fifty years before passing away in 2025.

Challenges and Triumphs

Jason Baró’s competitive track record supports his presence in the Moscow finals. He previously won the Grand Prix at the 12th International Ballet Competition of South Africa, marking him as one of the most promising talents nurtured by the Cuban ballet school, the only elite institution of its kind in Latin America.

However, his achievement stands in stark contrast to the challenges faced by Cuba's cultural sector. The 2026 Havana Ballet Grand Prix was canceled last May due to the country’s energy crisis, depriving the island of one of its most significant dance events.

Before heading into the final round, the school sent Jason off with words of encouragement: "Reaching the final of such an international competition is already a victory."
