A 17-year-old girl tragically lost her life in the neighborhood of La Güinera, located in the Arroyo Naranjo municipality of Havana, after being fatally stabbed in the chest during an altercation where she was not the intended target.

According to a Facebook post by a family member identified as Laneta Kbola Asere, the assailant's actual target was a young man known as El Jimagua, who was riding a motorcycle. Unfortunately, the girl, who happened to be riding along, received the fatal wound instead.

"He aimed a stab at El Jimagua, but it struck my cousin right in the chest," the family member wrote on the social media platform.

Described by her loved ones as "the twin"—a reference to her being a twin—the victim had just celebrated her 17th birthday.

Community Distrust and the Pursuit of Justice

The alleged attacker was named in the social media post as the son of a neighborhood resident. At the time of the online report, law enforcement had yet to apprehend him.

The family member shared images of the suspect, urging the community to report him if seen, highlighting a pervasive distrust in the police and a reliance on community-driven justice.

Dozens of commenters expressed disbelief over such a senseless crime.

Victim's Innocence and Social Reaction

A friend of the victim clarified rumors, stating, "She wasn't involved in any fight. She was just on a motorcycle with the guy who was helping her pick up an errand when the attacker appeared suddenly and aimed the stab; the guy dodged, and she got hit. Please respect the family's grief and don’t speak without knowing."

Hundreds of online users expressed their condolences over the heartbreaking loss.

La Güinera's Troubled History

La Güinera, a working-class neighborhood in southern Havana, has long been marked by marginalization and social unrest.

It was a focal point during the July 11, 2021 protests, where the young Diubis Laurencio Tejeda was killed by police action. The area again made headlines in May and June of 2026 for pot-banging protests against power outages and economic hardships.

The Arroyo Naranjo municipality has witnessed several homicides in recent months. In November 2025, Diosdaysis Sandoval Damas was murdered in the same area, and earlier that year, Rayne Paisan Dales met a similar fate.

Rising Violence and Lack of Legal Protection

This incident adds to the escalating violence in Cuba as documented by independent observers. The Cuban Observatory of Citizen Audit reported 2,833 verified crimes in 2025, marking a 115% increase from 2024.

Nationally, femicides surged to 45 cases in 2025. In December of that year, 17-year-old Heidi García Orosco was fatally stabbed by her partner in Jovellanos, Matanzas, a case contributing to that grim statistic.

Human rights organizations have documented over 350 femicides in Cuba from 2019 to June 2026, underscoring the lack of specific legislation and inadequate institutional responses for victims and their families.
