The United States Embassy in Havana has publicly criticized the Cuban State Security for its crackdown on Cuban citizens attempting to attend or work at its Independence Day celebration, part of the #Freedom250 campaign. The embassy questioned, "What do you think about state security threatening Cubans attending or working at events like the U.S. Independence Day celebration?" on the platform X.

The embassy's message highlighted that "many have reported that the regime is preventing them from attending" the event and posed a direct question to the regime: "Why is it so troubling for you that #OrdinaryCubans participate in an event celebrating freedom?"

Heightened Repression in Havana

A simultaneous crackdown targeted several activists and independent journalists in Havana. Yoani Sánchez, journalist and founder of 14ymedio, reported on Facebook, "We have a political police operation at the base of our building to prevent us from leaving home."

Independent journalist Camila Acosta, who corresponds for the Spanish newspaper ABC in Cuba, also noted increased surveillance outside her residence. "Several political police officers are watching my home. The operation is more intense than usual. Today is the 4/7 commemoration at Mike Hammer's residence," she shared on Facebook.

Intimidation Tactics Against Activists

The youth group Fuera de la Caja Cuba revealed that police summoned their member Anna Sofía Benítez Silvente — known as Anna Bensi, aged 21 — and the "Christ's Town Crier" for an "official warning" at 10:00 a.m. at the Havana del Este police station. "They want to intimidate us," the group wrote on Facebook. The summons, signed by First Lieutenant Julio Torres Suárez, followed days after Anna Bensi publicly confronted Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, the national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution.

Historical Context of Repression

This pattern of repression around July 4th is not unprecedented. In 2025, regime agents attempted to intercept the diplomatic vehicle carrying Camila Acosta to prevent her attendance at that year's reception, impacting other opposition figures as well.

The #Freedom250 campaign, launched by the embassy in May 2026, commemorates the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, inviting Cuban citizens to send messages about freedom.

Mission Chief Mike Hammer has pursued a proactive policy of engaging with families of political prisoners and activists, escalating tensions with the regime, which threatened to expel him in March 2025.

Ongoing Surveillance and International Pressure

Camila Acosta faced police surveillance at least three times during June 2026. In one instance, she exposed the State Security agent monitoring her home on social media. Hammer publicly praised her work in March 2026, stating, "I am always impressed by the courage of independent journalists in Cuba who strive to report the reality on the island."

Since January 2026, the Trump administration has imposed over 240 sanctions against the Cuban military conglomerate. Amid this international pressure, Cuba recorded 1,133 protests in April 2026, a 29.5% increase from the same period the previous year, according to data reported in May.
