A Violin Ritual to Eleguá Interrupted by Police in the U.S.

Thursday, July 2, 2026 by Matthew Diaz

A Cuban musician known for performing violin rituals dedicated to the Orishas encountered an unexpected turn of events during a ceremony for Eleguá. The police entered the premises and ordered everyone to evacuate just as the last song was about to be performed and the piñata for the Orisha was ready to be broken.

Yilian Violin, who goes by @violinoshun on TikTok, shared the unusual event in a 59-second video that garnered over 23,600 views in a matter of hours. She recounted that she was conducting the ritual at a client's home when officers knocked on the door.

"I couldn't finish playing because the police made us leave," she explained. The reason for the police intervention was the presence of homeless individuals who had entered the backyard, necessitating the clearing of the entire area to address the situation.

Quick Thinking Amidst the Unexpected

Instead of abandoning the ritual, the musician quickly decided, "Hey, you know what, let's take Eleguá, head to the corner, and we'll perform his song on the grass and break the piñata there."

And so they did. The client, musician, and the representation of the Orisha concluded the ritual on the street, on a grassy corner, thus completing the ceremony that had been halted by the police.

Yilian interpreted the whole incident as a sign from the Orisha himself. "This was indeed one of the biggest tests that Eleguá gave me," she stated, adding, "When Eleguá wants something, he always gives signs."

The Significance of Eleguá in Santería

The video was uploaded on the first day of July, with Yilian greeting the month with "Happy and Blessed month of July to everyone," and ending with the devotional phrase "más ferefún el ecuad," a Yoruba expression meaning "blessed be."

Eleguá is revered as the Orisha of paths, doors, and crossroads in Cuban Santería, a Yoruba-derived religion widely practiced in Cuba and among the Cuban diaspora. He is traditionally the first to receive offerings in any ritual and is often associated with mischief and wit, prompting his followers to see unexpected events as "tests" from the Orisha. The 2025 Letter of the Year for Cuban Santería advised paying special attention to Eleguá, emphasizing his continued importance among practitioners in the diaspora.

In her video description, Yilian encouraged her followers to share their own experiences: "Let me know in the comments what the biggest test this great Orisha has given you."
