A 29-year-old Cuban living in Houston has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for his involvement in transporting 19 undocumented migrants hidden behind a false wall in a cargo truck. This operation, according to U.S. authorities, posed a significant threat to the safety of those inside.
The U.S. Department of Justice reported that Juan Manuel Sifontes-Sinales pleaded guilty on February 12 before Federal Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos in the Southern District of Texas.
During sentencing, Judge Ramos remarked on the defendant's "reckless disregard for human life" and expressed concern over the dangerous conditions in which the individuals were transported.
Discovery at the Border
The incident took place on October 17, 2025, at the Javier Vega Jr. Border Patrol checkpoint near Sarita, Texas. Agents noticed discrepancies while inspecting the truck driven by Sifontes-Sinales.
A hidden compartment was found, constructed behind a false wall made of wood, plywood, and fiberglass panels. Inside this cramped space, 19 migrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador stood without access to water or food and no space to sit.
One of the rescued individuals later expressed fear for their life due to limited ventilation and the inability to escape the compartment in an emergency.
Connections to Smuggling Network
The investigation uncovered that Sifontes-Sinales was in direct contact with members of the smuggling network, including the operator of a safe house where migrants stayed before being transported.
Authorities also found the phone number used to send instructions to the hidden migrants on his device. Furthermore, vehicle records indicated that he had passed through the same checkpoint six times before, always supported by another car serving as a lookout.
The organization he was involved with reportedly smuggled over 25 undocumented migrants.
Entry into the U.S. and Future Deportation
The Justice Department noted that Sifontes-Sinales entered the United States on September 9, 2022, via Miami International Airport using a Spanish passport and a visa waiver. However, that waiver was revoked three days later, yet he remained in the country illegally.
Once his sentence is served, the Cuban national will face deportation as he is not a U.S. citizen.
The investigation was conducted by the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in collaboration with the Border Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Young Min Burkett prosecuted the case.
This sentence is part of Operation Recover America, an initiative by the Department of Justice to combat human trafficking and other forms of transnational crime. Since its inception, the Southern District of Texas has filed charges against 13,867 individuals, with 889 facing accusations related to migrant smuggling.
