On Sunday, former President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to declare communism as the most significant threat to the United States since major historical events like World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, and the September 11 attacks. His post, boldly signed with his full name in all caps, quickly garnered over 15,400 likes and 4,140 retruths within hours.

This statement is part of a broader rhetorical offensive that Trump has launched on two simultaneous fronts: an extensive post on Truth Social and a speech delivered to the Faith and Freedom Coalition in Washington D.C. In both, he described communism as a "ruthless and godless" force, positioning it as the most severe threat facing the nation.

In his online post, Trump elaborated on why he believes this ideology is dangerously appealing: "Communism is easy to sell. I would be the Greatest Communist in History. I would offer free rent, free housing, free food—everything is free. Unfortunately, after two or three years, any country that adopts this would fail."

The former president warned about the consequences he associates with such a model: "There will be no food, no housing, no military, nothing. They will become Third World in every sense, and everyone will suffer or die."

The immediate trigger for this offensive was the victory of progressive candidates supported by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani in the June 24-25 Democratic primaries, alongside a historic vote by the city's Rent Guidelines Board to freeze rents for over a million tenants. Trump perceived these developments as signs of communism taking root on American soil.

As early as last Wednesday, Trump had hinted at his stance with a message on Truth Social: "The communists are finally making their move. I have been waiting and preparing for this for a long time. The game has begun. Enjoy watching!"

This anticommunist rhetoric is not new to Trump's administration. In November 2025, he officially declared "Anti-Communism Week" from the second to the eighth of that month, highlighting that communism has claimed over 100 million lives in regimes that suppress freedom.

In terms of foreign policy, Trump signed two executive orders targeting the Cuban dictatorship: Order 14380 on January 29, 2026, which labeled Cuba as an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to national security, and Order 14404 on May 1, 2026, which expanded sanctions by freezing assets of regime officials and their adult family members.

Mamdani, whom Trump consistently labels as a "communist," identifies himself as a "democratic socialist" and was inaugurated as New York's mayor on January 2, 2026. Following his election, Trump threatened to cut $7.4 billion in federal funds to the city.

In his address to the Faith and Freedom Coalition, Trump added a religious dimension to his message, cautioning that "all communist countries violently attack religions" and that communists "will close your churches and kill your people," thereby linking anticommunism with the defense of religious freedom to a conservative Christian audience.
