Authorities have apprehended a group of seven Cuban nationals on Tuesday on a picturesque island in Yucatán, following the discovery of a significant drug stash that included marijuana, cocaine, crack, and ecstasy.

The arrests occurred on Holbox Island, located in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas in the state of Quintana Roo, according to local Mexican media reports.

The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Yoel, Greter, Daniela, Adriagne, Carlos Miguel, Juan Miguel, and Rafael, all hailing from Cuba.

The official report from the Secretariat of Citizen Security detailed that officers observed the group gathered in a green area along Lisa Street in Holbox.

"Upon noticing the police presence, they displayed evasive behavior and attempted to flee, prompting officers to intervene and conduct a relevant inspection," the report stated.

After a thorough search of the suspects and their belongings, law enforcement confirmed the presence of illegal substances, leading to the swift arrest of all seven individuals.

The operation was carried out by the Centurion Group from the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Quintana Roo, in collaboration with the Navy, National Defense Secretariat, and National Guard during preventive patrols in the area.

Details of the Drug Seizure

Authorities confiscated:

  • 201 small ziploc bags containing green, dry herb resembling marijuana.
  • 26 bags filled with a white powder resembling cocaine.
  • 11 bags with solid fragments similar to crack.
  • 10 bags with purple solid fragments resembling ecstasy.

The seized drugs suggest a distribution operation of considerable scale for a tourist destination like Holbox.

In addition to the narcotics, various containers used for storage were also seized, including a black fanny pack with camouflage, a nylon fabric bag, a patterned case, a gray suitcase, and an eco-friendly bag.

Legal Proceedings and Implications

The seven detainees, along with all physical evidence, have been handed over to the Special Prosecutor's Office in Quintana Roo, tasked with compiling the investigation and determining their legal status.

The immigration status of the arrested Cubans has not been disclosed.

Holbox Under Pressure from Drug Trafficking

This incident is not isolated. The island, celebrated as a top tourist spot in Quintana Roo for its pristine beaches, has been experiencing a surge in anti-drug operations throughout 2026.

As recently as May, authorities dismantled a maritime cannabis trafficking network operating between the port of Chiquilá and the island, resulting in six arrests and the closure of four businesses.

Reports from residents and business owners indicated that several local establishments were being used as drug trafficking points, extortion sites, and for collecting protection money by a cell linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.

"These actions are part of security forces' efforts to intensify the fight against drug sales and distribution in Holbox," reported 24 Horas Qroo.

A Pattern of Cuban Arrests in Mexico

The arrest of these seven Cubans in Holbox fits into a documented trend since 2023: an increasing number of Cuban nationals have been apprehended in Mexico for health-related offenses, from street-level drug dealing to more intricate distribution networks.

In Quintana Roo alone, on June 24, four Cubans were prosecuted in Cancún for distributing marijuana via Facebook, with justified preventive detention.

Earlier, on June 1, another four were processed for drug dealing in the Supermanzana 23 area of the same city.

Nationally, in January 2026, Remigio Valdez Lao, known as "El Milo," was arrested in Cancún. He was identified as the financial mastermind behind a Cuban-American cell linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, operating in Cuba, Mexico, Spain, and southern Florida.

In April, Julio Yidier, alias "El Tilín," was apprehended in Mexico City, suspected of leading a cell that concealed drugs in modified vehicles.
