A group of 16 Cuban students secured a total of ten medals at the 2026 Ibero-American Informatics Olympiad, comprising three silver and seven bronze, as reported by the Ministry of Education on their social media platforms.

This year's competition, hosted by Cuba, took place on June 20th in an online format. Participants competed simultaneously from various labs on the island, including facilities at the University of Informatics Sciences.

With this performance, the Cuban team ranked sixth in the Ibero-American medal tally, trailing regional powerhouses such as Brazil, Mexico, and Spain.

Notable Achievements from Cuban Participants

The silver medals were awarded to Maité Morales Carreras and Diego Ernesto Camacho Arcis, both from Villa Clara, along with Fernando José Joa Cruz from Granma.

The seven bronze medals went to Daniel Alexander Dosil Alsina and Ernesto Alejandro Solazar Coca from Santiago de Cuba; Daniel Alberto Seijo Aguila, Mauricio Cruz Siles, and Daniel Mantilla Diez from Villa Clara; as well as Zaniel García Orihuela and Ronelvys Fuentes Sánchez from Matanzas.

Performance Compared to Previous Years

According to Radio 26 of Matanzas, four students from this province were part of the Cuban team, securing two medals and an honorable mention. However, the official list from the Ministry of Education only recognizes two medalists from Matanzas.

The outcome in 2026 marks a relative decline compared to the previous edition: in the 2024 Olympiad held in Peru, Cuba earned eight medals—six silver and two bronze—and placed fourth among 16 countries with 166 participants.

Despite obtaining more medals overall in 2026, the lower proportion of silver medals and the lack of gold medals led to the delegation dropping two spots in the rankings.

Repeat and New Successes

Morales Carreras repeated her success, having previously won silver in the 2024 edition. Meanwhile, Mauricio Cruz Siles entered the 2026 Olympiad after winning silver weeks earlier at the IV Al-Khwarizmi International Olympiad on Mathematics and Informatics in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where Cuba emerged as the Latin American nation with the most medals.

The Ministry of Education extended congratulations to all members of the Cuban team, as well as their teachers, coaches, and families for their achievements in the regional competition.
