This Father's Day, Daniela Escarra found herself unable to celebrate with her husband by her side.
In the days leading up to the occasion, the wife of Eduardo "Eddy" Ceballos, the mind behind the satirical Despingovery Channel, took to Instagram to share two poignant messages that resonated with thousands. Her husband has been detained for over three weeks in Cuba, facing charges of disclosing state secrets, and he could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
"Father's Day is approaching, and I couldn't hold back my tears today. It breaks my heart to know you're far away, in a cold place devoid of the joy you deserve, away from your daughter and the family that loves and awaits you every day," wrote Daniela on her account @danyescarra_99.
In a subsequent post, she openly criticized the regime: "In their attempt to teach a lesson once more, they are tearing apart a family. By trying to silence a voice, they are leaving a home full of absence, questions, and pain."
The Arrest of Eddy Ceballos
Eddy Ceballos, at 38, was apprehended on June 1, 2026, in the Diez de Octubre district of Havana. The police operation prevented him from entering his home or notifying his wife.
The catalyst was the release on May 24 of a preview of what he termed his "most combative episode": an exploration of an abandoned military site featuring Soviet-era missiles, radars, and Cold War bunkers.
Initially, authorities informed the family of charges related to "military property invasion," but Cubalex highlighted that this charge doesn't exist under the current Cuban penal codes.
Legal and Physical Challenges
The situation intensified with an accusation of "revealing secrets concerning State Security," an offense prosecutable by military tribunal with potential sentences of up to 30 years behind bars.
Adding to the legal pressure, Eddy's mother disclosed on June 17 that he was physically assaulted while in detention.
Despingovery Channel gained viral popularity since April 2025 for its parody nature documentaries that humorously depicted the decay of Cuban urban infrastructure: potholes, ruins, and collapsed buildings. The name plays on the Cuban term "despingo," associated with chaos and ruin.
Hope Amidst Adversity
Eddy's case is not isolated. According to Prisoners Defenders, Cuba had 1,250 political prisoners as of March 2026, many of whom are fathers spending this holiday behind bars.
Yet, Daniela remains hopeful. "Your innocence will be proven today, tomorrow, and always, because there is no real basis to uphold such an unjust sentence," she expressed.
Their young daughter, whose Barbie-themed birthday was captured in family photos, also sent her message: a crayon drawing saying "I love you, Dad."
"Happy Father's Day, my Despingovery. We're waiting for you at home," Daniela concluded her heartfelt letter.
