Díaz-Canel Praises Cuban Fathers: "Champions in Daily Struggles"

Sunday, June 21, 2026 by Daniel Vasquez

On Father’s Day in Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel took to his X account to extend official congratulations to Cuban fathers.

The leader's message prominently highlights Olympic champion Mijaín López, portraying him as the epitome of fatherhood.

Following this, Díaz-Canel directs a brief note to all Cuban fathers, employing a "creative" play on the word "struggle," likening them to the island’s most decorated Olympic athlete.

"Mijaín, the five-time champion, is only surpassed by the love from his children. He descends from Olympus every day to be the earthly hero of Mijailcito and Nayha. Like him, every Cuban father is a champion in daily struggles, a pillar of strength, the first teacher of values. Congratulations to all!" the leader wrote, signing the message along with his wife, "Lis Cuesta Peraza and family."

The accompanying image features López on a wrestling mat, playfully interacting with his two children.

The Symbolism of Mijaín López

Using López as a figurehead is no accident. The athlete is the only one in Olympic history to secure five consecutive golds in the same individual event—130 kg greco-roman wrestling—at the Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024 Games. He stands as a powerful propaganda symbol for the regime.

After retiring in August 2024, López was honored as a Hero of the Republic of Cuba by Raúl Castro in December of that year. By January 2026, the regime showcased him in Spain to boost tourism.

The Stark Reality for Cuban Fathers

However, Díaz-Canel’s rhetoric starkly contrasts with the harsh realities faced by Cuban fathers in 2026.

Cuba is enduring its most severe economic and humanitarian crisis in decades: power outages lasting up to twenty hours a day, severe shortages of fuel and food, and runaway inflation eroding families' purchasing power.

The "daily struggles of Cuban fathers" that the leader celebrates with a sporting euphemism is, for millions, the grim reality of surviving without electricity, without food, and often, without family members—parents, children, uncles, and grandparents—by their side.

Emigration has split countless Cuban families, with parents and children separated for years, not only by geographical distance but sometimes also by ideological divides, having committed their lives to a revolution that ultimately left them behind.
