In a recent development, Cuban authorities have apprehended two individuals in the municipality of Cárdenas, accused of the murder of a young man inside a clinic located in Coliseo, Jovellanos, Matanzas province.

The suspects, identified as Pavel Morales Chill and Roberto Onel Batista Chill, had been on the run since the night of June 12, when the crime occurred. They were captured approximately 50 miles away from the scene.

According to a Facebook page managed by the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), titled "Con Todos La Victoria," the tragic event began at a local recreational venue. The victim engaged in a confrontation with the two assailants, during which they brandished knives, inflicting multiple injuries: one on his right hand and two on his arm.

Continuing Attack Inside the Clinic

The wounded individual was taken to the Pedro Pablo Rivera Cué clinic for medical attention. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the attackers did not relent.

A doctor from the clinic reported that the injured man was brought in with the aforementioned injuries, which were not initially life-threatening. However, before he could be stabilized, the assailants breached the clinic and attacked him once more.

Tragically, the young man succumbed to the injuries from this second assault, losing his life within the medical facility.

Public Outcry for Justice

After the incident, the suspects fled but were eventually found and arrested in Cárdenas, where they are now in custody awaiting legal proceedings.

A social media profile, "Nio reportando un crimen," which broke the news shortly after it happened, identified the victim as Adriel, known by the nickname "Matute."

Eyewitness accounts and citizen reports suggest that the altercation stemmed from the disappearance of a cell phone during a local bar party, escalating tensions between Adriel and the accused.

Adriel "Matute's" family and friends are demanding justice, urging that the "case be thoroughly investigated," as per the social media post.

Escalating Violence in Medical Facilities

This heinous act adds to the growing list of violent incidents occurring in Cuban medical facilities. On the same day as the clinic attack, an intensivist doctor was assaulted at the Hospital de Cárdenas. Moreover, in August 2025, a stabbing incident at the Policlínico Sur in Palma Soriano resulted in three injuries, including a nurse.

Matanzas has witnessed a disturbing rise in violence and insecurity, alarming its residents. On June 14, Malany, a 17-year-old, died from severe stab wounds received during an altercation with a 14-year-old in Cárdenas' Fundición neighborhood. Earlier, in April, 23-year-old Marina (Marian) Pino Martínez was murdered by her ex-partner in Jagüey Grande.

The municipality of Jovellanos has been particularly affected by extreme violence. In December 2025, a 17-year-old girl was killed by her boyfriend in the rural settlement of Finca Alcancía, and in August of the same year, a 24-year-old woman was murdered by her partner in Carlos Rojas.

The NGO Cubalex reported 135 incidents of public insecurity in April 2026 alone, including 28 murders.
