The U.S. Department of State has called for the immediate release of Jonathan David Muir Burgos, a 16-year-old Cuban teenager held in a high-security prison in Cuba, marking three months since his incarceration.

Riley M. Barnes, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, made the demand public through the official @StateDRL Twitter account, thereby solidifying the U.S. government's stance on the matter.

"Today marks three months since Jonathan David Muir Burgos, aged 16, was sent to a high-security Cuban prison, allegedly for participating in a protest. He urgently needs medical attention, which he has not received. No one—especially no child—should be jailed for their political or religious beliefs. We call on the Cuban regime to release him immediately along with all unjustly detained political prisoners," Barnes stated in the official Department of State release.

Jonathan was arrested on March 16, 2026, when he accompanied his father to a police summons in Morón, Ciego de Ávila, just days after the March 13 protests ignited by prolonged blackouts, food shortages, and the ongoing economic crisis.

On April 2, the Municipal Prosecutor's Office of Morón ordered his preventive detention, charging him with "sabotage," a serious offense in Cuba that can lead to a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Despite being a minor, he was transferred to Canaleta prison in Ciego de Ávila, an adult high-security facility, violating international standards for the protection of minors.

His family has reported that Jonathan suffers from severe dyshidrosis, infections, intestinal parasites, and vasovagal crises, all untreated.

On April 24, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures for Jonathan through Resolution 30/2026, recognizing that his life, integrity, and health were at risk of irreparable harm, and demanded that the Cuban state ensure him medical attention, dignified conditions, and access to his family and legal counsel.

The regime attempted to counter the allegations by releasing images of the young man playing piano in prison. However, his father, evangelical pastor Elier Muir Ávila, condemned this as manipulation, stating that his son was deceived into having those photos and videos taken without his consent.

Jonathan's mother, Minervina Burgos López, also publicly pleaded for his release, rejecting the images broadcast by official media.

Jonathan's situation is not unique. According to Cubalex, at least 16 arrests are linked to the Morón protests, including four teenagers. Christian de Jesús Crespo Álvarez, also 16, remains detained at Canaleta.

International pressure has been consistent: Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart demanded his release on April 28, a European parliamentarian denounced his imprisonment on April 23, and Freedom House joined the call on May 16. Amnesty International has also advocated for his freedom.

Jonathan spent his 17th birthday behind bars in Canaleta, becoming a poignant symbol of the Cuban regime's crackdown on minors following the March 2026 protests.
