On Tuesday, Donald Trump held a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Évian, France. The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and Ukraine's Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov, were also in attendance.

Zelenski shared images of the meeting on social media, with a brief yet meaningful message: "Coordinating positions is always crucial." This marked the first face-to-face discussion between the two leaders since Trump's arrival at the G7, buoyed by announcing a framework agreement with Iran.

During a separate discussion with the Emir of Qatar, Trump confirmed the meeting and outlined his new diplomatic priority: "Russia needs to make a deal. Russia has suffered significant losses, and Ukraine has as well."

Trump's arrival in Évian on Monday followed the announcement of a memorandum of understanding with Iran aimed at resolving the Persian Gulf conflict. However, the agreement, set for formal signing on June 19 in Geneva, faces skepticism due to unresolved nuclear and sanctions issues, Israeli doubt, and internal divisions within Tehran.

In a joint statement with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump expressed optimism about potential progress with Ukraine: "We had a productive conversation with President Zelenski and President Putin, and I believe there's an opportunity for resolution. Both are receptive."

Ukraine's Strategic Needs at the G7

Apart from the bilateral talks, Zelenski joined the broader G7+Ukraine session, presenting three key priorities: enhanced air defense missile systems alongside production licenses, a winter support package, and increased pressure on Russia.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that "the U.S. stands ready to support these initiatives" and warned that "Russia must understand its war will never be normalized."

The G7 leaders, including Trump, reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, agreeing to intensify pressure on Moscow. This could include new sanctions on Russian oil exports, facilitated by the anticipated reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Challenges on the Path to Peace

According to French diplomatic sources, Trump congratulated Zelenski on Ukraine's current standing in the conflict, noting that Ukraine no longer appears to be on the losing side.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, obstacles remain. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov denied receiving any official invitation from Kiev for a meeting between Zelenski and Vladimir Putin at the G7, stating that "there are no official channels between Moscow and Kiev."

Following unsuccessful attempts to arrange such a meeting during the summit, Zelenski proposed hosting it in the United States, suggesting it as a venue that would be more challenging for Putin to decline.

The situation remains grim as Russia launched attacks on Monday, resulting in at least 11 casualties and setting fire to Kiev's UNESCO-listed Dormition Cathedral.

The war, now over four years long, has outlasted World War II. In June, Putin rejected both a comprehensive ceasefire and Zelenski's direct negotiation offer, just after a three-day truce with a 1,000 prisoner exchange was agreed upon in May.

Present at the bilateral meeting, Rubio had previously stated on May 26 that the war "needs to end" and that the U.S. is "ready and prepared to facilitate" its conclusion.

Following the G7, Trump's diplomatic itinerary suggests new objectives. In June, Trump indicated that once the Iranian crisis is resolved, he would "make a brief stop" to address issues in Cuba, aligning with his March conversation with Rubio: "Your next project will be Cuba."
