Ukraine Strikes Major Moscow Refinery in Response to Russian Bombardment

Tuesday, June 16, 2026 by Mia Dominguez

On Tuesday, Ukraine executed a significant drone strike targeting Moscow and 13 additional regions in Russia, hitting the Kapotnia refinery located southeast of the capital. This act, described by EFE as one of the largest assaults on Moscow this year, marks a bold move in the ongoing conflict.

This strike follows a massive Russian offensive, where over 600 drones and 70 missiles were launched into Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 individuals and causing damage to the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Dormition Cathedral at Kyiv's Pechersk Lavra.

Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed the attack on the state platform Maks, stating, "Enemy drone attacks on Moscow have persisted over the last 24 hours. A drone damaged a Moscow oil refinery. There are no casualties. Emergency services are on-site handling the situation."

Russian authorities claim to have shot down 60 drones over the city. The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the fire at the refinery was under control, although firefighting efforts were ongoing.

According to Ukrainian sources, the Kapotnia refinery processes approximately 11 million tons of oil annually and fulfills nearly 40% of Moscow’s gasoline demand and half of its diesel needs, making it a strategically significant target.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the attack as a showcase of Ukraine's offensive capabilities: "This time, the Moscow region experienced the reach of Ukraine's long-range capabilities. A refinery was hit at a distance of 500 kilometers," he posted on social media, accompanied by footage of a drone flying over residential areas before striking an industrial site.

Zelensky added, "This is a justified response to Russian attacks and the prolongation of a war that must be concluded."

The offensive extended beyond Moscow; a drone strike ignited an oil depot in Krasnodar, while authorities in Bryansk reported the downing of 16 drones overnight, with an additional seven intercepted over Kaluga.

Overall, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that their air defenses intercepted 172 drones across 14 regions, including Astrakhan, Belgorod, Kursk, Volgograd, Tula, and Rostov, as well as Crimea and over the Azov and Black seas.

The immediate backdrop to this strike is Monday's Russian shelling, which damaged the Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv, a site of Christian cultural significance, where remnants of at least two Geran-2 drones were discovered.

Zelensky described that attack as "one of the gravest crimes by Russia against Christian culture," while Moscow denied responsibility, blaming an American Patriot missile without providing evidence.

In recent months, Ukraine has ramped up attacks on Russian refineries and oil infrastructure as a strategy to weaken the financial resources fueling the war, demonstrating increased capability to penetrate Russian air defenses and strike deep within enemy territory.

The previous largest attack on Moscow this year occurred on May 17, when Russia claimed to have downed 81 drones over the capital, out of more than 500 launched by Ukraine.
